Climate control vent noise

My car has developed a weird climate control quirk. With the heater on auto, the system will stop completely for a split second. It sounds like either the vents are closed or the fan is turned off. It then starts up again like normal. I don't think it's just transitioning between modes (e.g. defogging and normal heat) because all the vents sound like they shut down. It will do this anywhere from zero times during a drive, to three times in five minutes. Anybody else have this?

with AUTO turned on, I can hear the AC ventilation valves opening and closing some time during a typical ride, but this should happen only when the circulation button is set to auto.
