Euro Airbox
Possibly the easiest mod I've ever done. I took my time and 15 minutes later... done. In a hurry, and with practice, 4 minutes.
Mad props to CentralPA E82 for selling me a pristine product. Mr. Subjective says "Brilliant piece of kit. Adds a bajillion HP, is more responsive and looks fantastic." Mr. Objective says "You've no real data, but it still looks fantastic." The guy who does most of his own maintenance says "Thank God I won't have to pull the air box just check/clean the air filter." The Modder under warranty says "15 minutes? Big whoop!" |

It really does look gorgeous.
I think its gains compare to the AFE SI closed intake.

New, retail? Probably. I got mine off of a 1ADDICTS member. You could also check out the E90-1-2-3 For Sale section.

I have this, but I doubt there is much in the way of gains. I did it because I wanted the easy maintenance.

I wonder why there would be a difference between the euro and us version. Does the filter lay flat in the euro instead of sideways in the US? Can someone shoot a pic of the euro box open? That looks way more user friendly....

Not that I recall, but it's been over six months...
Apparently both the Euro and US Performance air boxes have noise makers, or at least noise directors.

It might quiet down your exhaust, but the engine roar does have a different tone. mind you its not Perf intake

Let's say I had the performance exhaust with the stock intake and I love the sound. Would changing to the eurobox dampen the PE sound? What would happen if I added the performance intake? Also, can you do performance intake with the euro box or does the pI have a new box altogether?

BMW Performance intake will add a little more intake noise, which will slightly reduce what you hear from the PE. Euro box has its own version of the BMW Performance intake, and is a different part from the US BMW Performance intake. It replaces the runners, lid, and adds a sound pipe to the cabin. This would be my setup.

Just taking a look at realoem, it shows that the MAF is the most expensive part of this damn thing. I talked to someone at ECS, and they said you just reuse your current MAF when you switch from the North American airbox to the European airbox. Is it possible to buy the euro airbox without the MAF, to save $300? Can I order separate parts from BMW to essentially make my own Euro airbox?

You could essentially make your own Euro airbox with your stock airbox. Delete the charcoal filter, and swap the paper filter for, hypothetically, a K&N filter. Then, the only major difference between the two would be in the filter design. |
