CIP21 Heads Up

Having CIP21 loaded today.......278 mins to load according to the BMW center computer.
Just thought you should know it's going to tie up your car most of the day.
Since the software is still loading, I have no information on what it fixed or broke.

Any new features? Was CIP21 installed on your car to fix a problem/issue or your SA hooked you up...please keep us updated. Thanks

Actually just took the car in for a few minor (non-software) tweaks.
The service technician and I were just talking when I mentioned CIP21. He said that he would put it on if I wanted. I figured why not.
SA only arranged for a loaner after being told of the time delay.

CIP 21 was finally installed. Took over 5 hours.
Below is a list of the E90 corrections:

1) The stored station list is intermittently empty on CCC equipped vehicles. However it is still possible to change stations using the steering wheel buttons.

(CCC is Computer Communications Center) or iDrive

2) CCC Navigation displays incorrect vehicle position. Refer to SI B84 10 05.

3) CCC: Audio switches off briefly for 5 seconds with RDS active. Refer to SI B65 26 05.

4) After programming the CCC with CIP 19.x or Progman 20.x it is not possible to store radio stations.

5) The battery is dead. During "Energy Diagnosis" the JBE (Junction Box Electronics) is identified as the "sleep mode preventer". Only concerns vehicles with Comfort Access (SA 322).

6) When the vehicle is double-locked from the inside using the remote control key and the occupant moves, the alarm is triggered. Only concerns vehicles with Comfort Access (SA 322).

So far so good. Needed to reset all presets and reacquired bluetooth.

If you want CIP 21, you will have to let your SA know that you have one of the above problems or they most likley will not authorize the update.

How could BMW modernize SO much of the eletronics in the car - witness the new fiber optics for instance - and still have some 1982 cheeseball serial connection to upload software updates? That can't be THAT much data, I'm guessing they do some Xmodem-type 9600 bps serial transfer that is just slower than molasses. NO excuse not to have a simple USB2 or Firewire interface for uploading.. would take minutes, not hours.

From what I understand. it not as simple as updating programs on a hard drive. It is more like updating the eprom of every computer chip in the car. From what I was told, all modules must be updated to the same relative revision so that internal communactions can take place.
A faster delivery system might improve the process, but I suspect not much.

Nevertheless, 5 hours is insane.

BMW "Ultimate Technology Machine - NOT"

No doubt my 325xi is the best car I have ever driver, however, the electronics are hardly worthy of "German engineering". From a failed oil sensor, ghost like warning lights for "SOS" BMW assist to terrible owner manuals and, at best, indifferent BMW Assist you sometimes wonder is you purchased a Hyundai or a BMW. Also CIP 20 should have been handled by a general recall instead of by "Customer Complaint Basis". Sorry, a bit off the subject but a bit related.

Did CIP 20 eventually start going on at the factory? I ask because, although I just took delivery a week or so ago, I am having the Bluetooth problems normally associated with the lack of CIP 20 update. Am I nuts?

Logically, you would think it would be standard after the date it came out but for our friends at BMW that may be a bit too much over the top for them. You should confirm with your dealer. I can tell you my BB 7100g works like a champ with CIP 20 and is not an approved, certified phone.

They added an item here (#7)
The following software errors were corrected with the release of Progman 21.00.00 (Target data Status E89x-06-03-510).

1) The stored station list is intermittently empty on CCC equipped vehicles. However it is still possible to change stations using the steering wheel buttons.

(New) 7) CCC: Loss of audio in all modes. Vehicles equipped with Top-HiFi. Refer to SI B65 02 06.

Also look for Other CIP release info in this forum for more CIP lists. I no longer post the whole list as all the older ones are repeated each time.

20, 19, 18 and 17 are all here somewhere
