Wait, lemme get this straight. You had a warning light that your cornering light was malfunctioning, so you changed your cornering lights, and the warning went away?
I just want to make sure I have all the facts here.

Outstanding! I am really glad that you fixed this, and without getting buttraped by a dealership.

Hey Folks, I'm seeing a consistent right corning light fault every time I start-up the car. Well, I see the light bulb warning, but the OBD code says that it's the right corning light. The corning light does not light up. All of the other lights within headlight assembly are fine.
I replaced both corning light bulbs and reset the OBD fault code, but the issue persists. The headlights are stock. I'd disable the dang corning lights if I could, but BMWhat indicates that I have an FRM with firmware that won't allow it to make a coding update without causing major problems. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should check next? I'd like to avoid the dealership service department if possible. Thanks! |

BMW Tech here: The FRM doesn't need to be programmed after replacement of a bulb. Pop the sucker in and if it works, good to go. If not, You have other pressing issues. Typically, I see the SMC modules get water in them all the time. The gaskets around the covers (on the bottom of the headlight) and very prone to failure and allow water into the controller. Check that before anything.
EDIT: The part is about $100 and takes about two hours to install on the slow side. Although not a programmable module, you will need to code the FRM. Please note: Coding is not programming. I'm not sure how other dealerships do it, but we charge less for coding then we do programming, although many don't know the difference. ISTA/P will code a full car in maybe 30 seconds. Programming, depending on dated software, can take hours.

Downeaster1, thanks for the reply! I'm assuming that I have to remove the bumper and pull out the headlight assembly to replace the SMC. Is the best way to go about this to replace the SMC myself and then have a technician "code" the FRM?
I'm also not seeing an "SMC" within any of the parts component diagrams that I can find for the headlight assembly. Could please point out that part for me? Thanks! Last edited by gratuitous; 05-26-2016 at 10:28 AM.. |

There is a coding path within BMWhat to disable the corning lights, but not the voltage monitoring of them. I have attempted do disable the lights via BMWhat, because I don't much care for corning lights. However, BMWhat balked at updating the FRM due to a firmware issue in the FRM1 that is installed in my car. The app says that it would have been able to write the code in an FRM2 or FRM3, but that it didn't want to code to FRM1 for fear of completely messing up my lighting system. So, there you have it. Sounds like I need to get it diagnosed by a BMW tech.

Oddly, this turned out to be related to the fact that the contacts for the right Xenon high beam bulb were corroded. The right high beam bulb wasn't working. I rarely use my high beams, so I had no idea. How a high beam bulb malfunction turns into a cornering light warning I do not know. However now that the contacts are clean and the right high beam is functioning properly, the right cornering light error is gone.

I get a left cornering light malfunction every time after I wash the car. So it's sure water related. All lights work fine. I looked into how the access tabs are seated and determined that the left one was not sealing well at the corner closest to the kidney grills. I flipped the rubber gasket, lubricated it with gummypfledge and put it back. And sealed the seams with electrical tape on top. Will see if next carwash or rain will trigger it.
