Question Thinking of going back to stock sizes

I am going to be ordering new tires in the next few weeks and I am thinking about returning to the stock sizes. I am currently running 225/40 18 and 255/35 18 on the stock 135i rims.

My thoughts about returning to the stock sizes 215/40 18 and 245 35 18

- less rotational mass (tires are lighter), better fuel efficiency, shorter sidewalls which looks better, tires fit better, the stock rims are narrow at 7.5" and 8.5".

downsides? Maybe slightly less grip with a slightly smaller footprint? In my opinion the car has always felt a little floaty / off with the wider and taller tires. I think returning to the smaller stock sizes might return some of the sharpness and feel.

I am thinking of going with the new Hancook evo 2 tires. So back to stock sizes or stick to the 225/255?

did you switch from RFTs when you got the 225/255s? That would explain the floatiness. The 1er suspension was designed to soak up the extreme harshness of RFTs.

Hankooks are very soft IMO, you may be less happy than you are now.

Even BMW(on the 335i's) went to the 225/255's size tires. I think its pretty good tire size choice.

Your gonna find it pretty difficult to find a 215 front tire. 225's are much more common. Perhaps you should go with 225/245's. ? But for me when I found out that Michelin PS3's were way cheaper in 255's vs 245's... that was the deciding factor. I also found that when going with the 225/255's at higher speeds(over 100 mph) the front suspension tracked better.

What ever you go with... be sure to get a new alignment done too. It doesn't take much of a "hit" to knock your alignment out.

Thank you for the comments, the new Hancook Evo 2 tires are supposed to have much stiffer sidewalls compared to the first generation of that tire. I am hoping for some reviews soon. My current tires are non run flat. The 335 has wider rims then our cars being 8" and 9" so the 225/255 works better. Our 1 series rims are only 7.5" and 8.5"

I decided it was time to try going back to the stock sizes and see how my car performs. Ordered the new Hancook Evo 2 (K120) tires.

I'm pleased to read that these tires in stock size only weigh 19lbs front and 22lbs rear. This will be a big weight reduction in rotational mass.

Got them in today. The fronts do not look narrow at all for 215s

Tire weight depends a lot on make/model but if you're sticking to the same tire yes the 225/255 will weigh more, but I prefer the improved traction and better rim protection. Plus the 225/255 will fill in the wheel gap better lol.

I agree that there might be more rim protection. I am not sold that there is automatically improved traction (on stock rims) just because the tire is 10mm wider. I believe there is some merit to the way a 7.5" and 8.5" rims fit 215 & 245 tires as opposed to tires that are arguably not optimal size for the 1 series narrow wheels.

I went with 215/40/18 and 245/35/18 Hankook Ventus V12 Evos on my new wheels and couldn't be happier. They grip and ride really well, plus I think they fill out pretty nice... not a skinny looking tire.

Specs:
  • Front: 18×8 ET 35 – 215/40/18
  • Rear: 18×9 ET 40 – 245/35/18
  • Lowered on Eibach Pro-Kit
