HPFP Failure getting close on 2010?

So today I was running low on gas on my way home from work, but I didn't want to stop at any gas stations except Shell which was well reachable with the amount of gas I had left. I pulled into the gas station with about 2 gallons left of gas, the attendant put the gas pump into the car and started filling. Right as he started filling my car started shaking a little bit and the revs went up and down a little bit exhibiting "rough idle." Am i already getting a bad HPFP? I've never had any long starts and my car ONLY has 300 some miles on it .Or is it just the low amount of gas in the car.
Thanks in advance

+1, though I'm not sure why it would react violently unless he had less gas than he thought.

Ya I have never filled a car up while running I did not know a station would even let you do that.lol. Maybe the pickup in the tank was sucking some air for some reason, not sure. if you didnt get an SES light dont worry, but just keep alert to the cranks, and if it starts taking longer to turn over then you have an issue. I already had it happen to me with 1300 miles on the car.

Could it have been a lack of pressure in the tank because it wasn't sealed with the gas cap? I've had cars that wouldn't start or would run like crap when the gas cap was just loose.

And as other's have said... turn the car off at the pump!!! I'm shocked that people actually pump gas with their engines on.

In California you would most likely be shot or at least imprisoned for life if you left your vehicle running while at the pump...

I've experienced the same little revs in my car but it's usually only when starting it cold.

Please don't tell me (not that it's surprising) that the hpfp is jacked for 2010 too.

Get ready for disappointment. I'm sure BMW would have made some kind of noise (big or small) about changes under the hood. I don't expect my '10 to be mechanically different at all from the '09s and '08s.

For my entire driving career I've never turned off my engine lol in my car while fueling, there's not much of a law about turning off your engine while fueling.
But let's hope it was just air in the tank.

It varies from car to car but some do stall out or run like shit when the gas cap is off while running.

I'm surprised you haven't been getting consistent SES lights.
A removed gas cap while the engine is still running should be detected as a HUGE leak in the system, thus triggering a warning

Sure, even driving into a gas station might cause a problem, as the cars engines are running and there are fuel vapors in the area, but shutting the car off simply removes a potential that is easily removable, just by shutting the engine off.

On another note, you should never run the tank down to two gallons! Let alone a brand new car.

My girlfriend says this as well and I never understood the logic. When her car hits a quarter tank she's filling while I wait until I see daylight between the "E" and the needle. How does the engine possibly know how much gas in in the tank for there to be any adverse effects? The tank is tapered! Please explain the logic behind this thinking... (I'm legitimately curious).

The theory is that "impurities, sludge, etc" accumulate in the bottom of a gas tank and when drawn down to a very low level, these higher concentrations of particulates can harm filters, or even cause improper detonation. The problem is people are stupid and don't understand fluid dynamics and the purity demands placed on fuel processing. There aren't any damn "floaties" in the bottom of a tank.
