Front Window Re-initialize?

I have heard of this happening and thought I knew how to re-initialize the front window.

When I pull the close button, the window goes up to the top, then opens about 2/3's the way down. If I push the button closed, it goes all the way to the bottom. But unless I time it just so, I can't get it to stop in the 'up' position. Also, it doesn't jitter the 1/4" when I open the door any more.

It has lost it's brains. I thought to re-initialize it, you hold it all the way to the top and keep the button up for 30 seconds, but of course I can't do that because it's new 'up' position is 2/3 open.

WTF - anyone dealt with this before?

Known issue! Had same problem, and heard of 3ers having same problem.
Might have to be reprogrammed or might need a new window modulator (they are made in orient).
Bring in for service...under warranty.

I had bookmarked this from another part of the forum and have used it when my battery has died. - it works.

The Official Reset Proceedure

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Courtesy of a BMW tech on another forum, ...with thanks.

Initialization is performed on the power window switch of the relevant door.
Requirements for correct initialization:
• Initialization with engine running
• Convertible top, doors and windows closed

Initialization comprises:
• Erasure of initialization
• Reinitialization

An initialization must be performed:
• In the event of malfunctions, e.g. no one-touch control function, no opening or if available no comfort function is possible
• After the power window drive has been replaced
• After work is carried out on the power window mechanism
• After a power supply interruption, e.g. disconnection of the battery or disconnection of the power supply to the door
• After the door window glass has been removed and installed or replaced
• After adjustment work on the door window glass
• After adjustment work on the convertible top
• After replacement of seals

Erasure of initialization:
• Open door window glass fully
• Operate power window switch in "Open" position four times within 10 seconds

This erases initialization of the power window, anti-trapping protection and toll function are inactive.
Check whether one-touch control (toll) function is inactive, otherwise repeat procedure.

Reinitialization:
Avoid a break between the two steps!
• Open door window glass fully
• Operate and hold power window switch in "Close" position (second switch stage)
• Once the upper end position has been reached, hold power window switch in "Close" position for approx. 2 seconds longer
• Open door window glass fully
• Operate and hold power window switch in "Close" position (second switch stage)
• Once the upper end position has been reached, hold power window switch in "Close" position for approx. 2 seconds longer

I took it in to the dealer, the had to "de-initialize" and "re-initialize" the window. Much what you are describing above. Pictures or even a video would help of this process, as it seems a little confusing.

I think these cars are getting a little too complex.
Next thing you know you'll have to realign the dilithium crystals just to get the fuel filler door open.

On my 1983 E21, all I have to worry about is making sure the window crank handles line up evenly when the windows are rolled up. If not, a phillips screwdriver lets you take it off, roll either way one spline and puit it back on.

Times have changed!

Basically it boils down to:
1) hold down open window switch till window fully drops.
2) press the button to open the window 4 times in a row for a short interval
3) now when you try to do the auto up it won't work. If it does repeat the above.

4) open window fully
5) close window fully by holding down button till it reaches the top and then hold for 2 seconds longer
6) open window by holding down button till it stops
7) repeat step 5.

Your done!

this happened to me a couple a weeks ago and i put up a post that im to lazy to look for right now, but all you have to do is have the car on with window all the way up, roll window down, then back up and hold it in the up position for about 30 seconds, and it worked for me.

So, I tried this and it appears after a while, the window stops working and remains open in the 2/3 position.

Solution!

Right, first time poster so forgive me if I'm all over the shop.

If anything you've already seen hasn't done the trick try this.
Plug key fob in, press for ignition only (no engine start) at the same time as this press and hold the "open" button on the problem window, I waited about 15 seconds. (this killed the comfort function)

Then repeat the process of "close" for 15 seconds and "open" for 15 seconds.

Back story to my issue is my car had a dead battery, don't know why I'd driven the day prior and after booting the battery it'd appear it had blown a bulb and the window reg went all stupid.

Hope this helps some of you guys here.
