Coils & Plugs
I am looking for definitive information on best practice for maintenance of coils and plugs.
With all due respect I am not seeking opinions so much as hard data based on professional experience. Thanks in advance. |

My thoughts on this and just did it to my car about to turn 60k. I choose BMW parts and will go into why for each level of expense.
Least expense: Amazon Bosch plugs and Coils is very affordable together https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0774YC95J - I have read reviews on ECS, Turner and Amazon it appears 1/10-1/20 fail rate on this combo the reviews are like a broken record. $140ish DIY Recommended: Find your fav supplier get Delphi Coils($40per) and NGK plugs This is oem but without the BMW payment plan. fail rate is low, cost $320ish BMW Parts: it's about $575 for the BMW parts one advantage is BMW covers them for 2years parts and labor even if a dealership didn't install them. I work at a BMW dealer and got a discount but still lots more for the middle option. peace of mind won the day on the 2yr coverage. |

Yes 1M plugs are Bosch. I have seen issues on e46 swapping between NGK and Bosch. So I now go with whatever BMW puts in the model. Bosch. Also on coils BMW started to replace coils with Eldor ones for a bit but they have returned to Delphi. Those are the current coils. The coils are a "check" item, as long as they work whereas plugs are 45k miles or 3rd oil change at 15k miles (not counting 1200 mile break in service). But original 1M coils are weak and most of our cars haven't hit 45k miles. I recently changed my plugs and coils at 23K miles because I had original recalled coils and a slight miss at idle. Just to rule things out, I changed plugs and coils. If coils actually fail in USA I believe bmw replaces them on US cars. Mine is canadian so I paid out of pocket.

This thread might help:
https://www.1addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1459871 There's some great info in this thread from nachob and Eagle01. My posts (which hopefully may be helpful since I recently replaced plugs and coils and did the same research you are doing) are #27 and #33. Good luck and let us know if you have more questions. |

23 miles! Fun fact, @nachob also changes the oil in his 1M at least daily.
For the 1M, I think fuel injectors have extended warranty coverage by BMW, but not ignition coils. Please chime in if I'm wrong. (I would like to be wrong.) |
