Ignition Coil - 29D1 Misfirings, cylinder 5
It appears my Ignition Coil on Cyl 5 has decided that it's not interested in doing hard work.
29D1 Misfirings, cylinder 5 is the code it throws with a lovely engine light on the dash, happens when the coil has to dish out a spark in quick succession ( i.e 5.5krpm+). Has anyone else had this issue in the past? I've swapped the coil over and gone for a drive and found that the misfire follows the coil... so it's time to replace that. Since I'm there - I'm opting to replace all the plugs at the same time. Should I be replacing all the coils? or is it better just to do one? Is the Bimmer part required, or is it like the spark plugs - where the bosch plug does the same job and is cheaper without the 'BMW' label.. Chitty chitty bang bang |

Hey Paul, where have you been mate? No need to change all coils but do all your plugs. I had a misfire on cylinder 2 last month and changed the coil and all was good. I always have a few spare coils on hand cause they come in handy. Recommend everyone keeps some spares in the garage.
Bosch is fine. |

I've been throwing 29D0 and 29D2 and haven't got to the bottom of yet it. Suspect the ignition coils too but only happens at track. Can you update when you change the ignition coil out?

Mine happened about 20 minutes after my last quarter mile run as soon as I was leaving the track. |

+1. IF your car has high miles... say over 70K miles... I would just replace all the coils. Even though that is not cheap. Some places even sell a high performance coil kit, like Cobb or BavAuto(I think). You could just replace the coil that is acting up though. AND when you replace the spark plugs... only buy the plugs from a BMW dealer. The aftermarket plugs (even though they are the same part number and made by Bosch) are different somehow and cause misfiring codes to throw as well. USE only plugs bought from a dealer!! See my Park plug DIY for more of that. There is also a Cobb video that is very handy to watch how to replace the coils and plugs. Dackel

Edwin - where did you get your ignition coils from and how much did they cost?
Yeah sorry I've been MIA - between work and getting the wife pregnant I've been elsewhere! |

Could somebody explain what dack was talking about. Bosch part number which is the same as the BMW part number for the plugs. I thought that they were identical except one has BMW Bosch on it the other only has Bosch. Both plugs are stamped the same part number?
