Did I read this correctly, he actually pointed out that downshifting midcorner upset the rear, and it was the cars fault?!?!?!? Wow, this was a great article but sometimes I wonder who is behind the keys. That is a very, very well setup 135!!!

wonder how a 335i would stack up against the M3? Either way, great job on the 135i

Am I the only one that noticed they are comparing a N54 1M to a N55 135i? Regardless, this shouldn't change the outcome of how the two handle, but I would think you would want to compare more apples to apples and have a N54 135i instead of the N55. I've never driven a N55 equipped BMW, but I would think the power output is completely different. Your going from twins to a twin-scroll single.

Great article and read

I would expect the 135i to win though; from a cost standpoint it cost 58k to build vs the stock 1M @ 46k. I wonder how things would stack up if the 1M was allowed the 12k difference worth of parts, or if the 135i was only allowed 6k worth of upgrades (point being both built to the same budget starting with a new car)

You don't need to spend that much to beat a 1M. However to be fair a 1M is a better platform to start any modding. The wider track and the ability to stuff more rubber is worth a lot. You could get a tune, upgrade the suspension and get some good rubber all for less than 10k and beat a 1M down a strip or around the track. You could spend half that much on a 1M and the results will swing back to 1M. All of this irrespective of the drivers ability. So an experienced driver in a 135 will always beat the 1M in less experienced hand and the same will be true if the cars were a 128 and a 135.

edit - damn iphone cut out half the post.

so these arguments about which car is faster is really infantile. for as long as humans have walked this planet there has been an argument about who got the bigger stick. there will always be someone with a bigger stick. you can never win! the whole point of modding in my IMO is to customize and spec out to your specific needs through trials and errors in a way you could never from a manufacturer. I think everyone should enjoy the ride and the experience of owning a terrific car and not worry too much about the M snobbery that is perpetuated by some defensive, insecure personality that feels their whole identity is based around what others think. my .02. thanks for listening

well there's no surprise, even more compelling in Australia, where the 1m goes for over 100k .

mind you on a cost benefit in the US i'd go the 1m, if only for the wider rear track.

Well how about you spend $995.00 for ESS Software on a 1M?

Excellent read, most enjoyable. Articles like this always have me Googling new parts, realising my bank balance and then reminding myself to be happy for others! Purchasing my 135i 2nd hand, I do pay 1/3'rd of the amount in monthly repayments. As much as I'd love a 1M, I just can't conceive of myself spending this sort of money on a car (house first!) unless I get lucky with the lotto. And by the way, what does one have to install in order to end up with a 4 shot espresso ride? All this cream and caramel really doesn't nothing for me: I like it strong, dark and with a harder edge!

Fender rubbing issues on those rim widths, I'd have thought.

See you drive an '11 model? In a year or two, when you're bored, go add a JB4 to it and you'll understand his perspective

Obviously forgotten in this article: resale value ?

I'll take a second hand stock vehicle any day over one that has 18.000$ in modifications.
This just tells me that the owner is nuts =) Maybe the car has been driven in the same way ?

Personally I'd rather have a factory purpose built car than a heavily modded car.

everything that the 1 series M has, can be installed on a 135 - except the rear fenders and front fenders. if you wanted to go crazy you could, but honestly, i'd prefer to have the 135 install a SUPERIOR limited slip and just put in all the m3 suspension parts, including the bushings, and a better suspension like the kw clubsports.

i wouldn't consider - a lsd and suspension to be "heavily modded". only a few 1 series M owners will track their cars.

Agree with the article. Take a well maintained pre-owned 135i with low mileage and do the modifications to your own desires and ultimately you will have the car you want for less. You can also get the 1M feel so long as you do the things that are often overlooked, but you will have to be the person isn't bothered by the lack of an M badge.

It's not about the M badge. Read the entire thread. Like many other 1M owners, I'm a prior 135i owner.

Or better yet, read 2 posts right above yours. Suspension upgrades + an LSD doesn't quite cut it.
