Question about vibration

approaching 2000 miles, starting to notice vibration in the steering wheel and shifter stick when i press on the gas and accelerate... anyone know why i am starting to feel the vibration more? Is the engine just maturing? or should this be checked... The vibration is very suttle atm and only when accelerating. When the car was brand new there was 0 vibration however.. wondering..

There should be no vibration. I've rarely gotten the vibration you mention.. a shimy on the steering wheel. After a few hard stops it goes away so I've always thought it was something on the rotors that just needed to be shed away. Happens sometimes from what I understand.

If that's not it I'd have the dealer look at it if it was me.

I dont think you should be feeling vibrations in your steering wheel from anything with the engine. my guess is either your alignment is off or one of your front tires is out of ballance.

have you hit anything? pothole, curb, rough ground or something?

my cars front end is as solid as it was when i bought it 19,000 miles ago.

I doubt it would be my tires or alignment because the vibrations only start and stop when i press on the gas peddle and rev the engine while under load etc... Im thinking it is either the engine, transmission, or exhaust or a combination of all. have no idea.. taking it to sonnen bmw this saturday to have it looked at. anyone know of best service center in bay area?

Shifter vibrates when in neutral but I've been told a few times that it's normal. Don't feel any vibration when actually shifting.

I have 4.6k miles on mine. I do not feel any vibration on steering wheel, cabin or elsewhere. This is the only car I had that the stick shifter moves like a belly dancer....

Maybe it could be the run flats? I felt that a bit of slight vibrations but I feel it's from the tires....

Shifter will vibrate in neutral, it's "directly attached to the engine." That's why it's so much fun! Controlling all that power...the power!

Have it checked. You might have an ignition coil going bad.
At idle it can feel smooth, but under load it might be showing it's fault, which is, it's not firing everytime. You'll feel it as a vibe.
Most often it happens at idle too, so you're idle will not feel smooth, and when you take off it'll feel very vibey and jerky.
If this occurs only under load and not idle, then it'll feel like a vibe as well.

The other thing it could be is a engine mount that is damaged/faulty.
It could be loose or broken, but BMW should be able to diagnose that too.

Wheel vibration is felt in the steering, seats, and cabin depending on where the balance problem is. But, balance problems typically occur around the same speed everytime. So, once you hit like 55mph you feel the vibe.
Then as you keep going faster it could disappear at say 70mph.
That's usually a tire/wheel balance issue.

Balance vibes in the steering or pedals tends to indicate the balance problem is in the front tires/wheels. Vibes in your seat, passenger seat, or cabin, then to indicate a problem with the rear wheels/tires.

Alignment is almost never the cause of tire/wheel vibration.
Poor alignment can cause irregular tire wear, which then could cause a vibration.
If your tires are wearing oddly, then yes, have the alignment checked too.

One more thing, your exhaust system can cause these types of vibes under load as well. If the exhaust system has broken hangers somewhere, it will allow the system to vibrate, and since it's attached to your engine it will come through there into the steering and shifter, and possibly into the cabin.

If it's obvious and/or getting worse, take it in.

I had a vibration in the steering wheel and body that took me a year to solve with a Mercedes. We started with balance and alignment. We then tried new tires and rotors. We then looked into the driveshaft and diff. Then new front struts. Many months and $ later, I still had the problem! Then my guy tried non-standard front end alignment settings and that fixed it. But the car put me through so much hell I hated it and sold it.

Vibrations are usually simple to resolve but they can be very tricky.
