that's hilarious!

bit off topic: but do anyone here knows what is the actual weight of the engine cover, and what are the weight savings for replacing this with a carbon fiber one?

Insignificant gain, the plastic cover only weighs like 3-4lb

and a waste IMO. It will yellow over time due to heat. Unless you only put it on for car shows then it might be worth doing something cool with a carbon fiber cover.

Is there any functional need for an engine cover? Does it protect the hood in some way or help w airflow?

There is a foam pad under the valve cover. It's there to quiet the noise from the Direct Injection. When I changed my spark plugs I was shocked at how loud the engine is without that valve cover installed. Second function is to prevent dirt/dust/water from getting in contact with your sparkplugs/coils/injectors and wiring. Third is to prevent oil(when adding oil) to get in contact with the sparkplugs/coils/injectors and wiring.

As we know, the engine bay is not safe from air, humidity, dirt, heat, cold, etc. An engine cover serves to cover the engine. So yes, it is functional.

Regarding the hood, see also the under hood shield:

I like the idea of an action or splatter painted engine cover....but I don't like the way his was painted....not enough energy or abstract energy in its execution.
