Help needed with odd tire wear.
I went to a practice autocross event (at Packwood, WA) on Saturday and when I changed my tires back to my DD tires I noticed the right front tire looked like the pic below. The left front was similar but not as bad. Does anyone know what the cause is?
The tires are RE71Rs, made this year, the front has -3.3* camber, barely any toe out and I was running 30 lbs of air. I heard these tires don't need a lot of pressure. This is the 3rd event this year on these tires and I didn't notice this after the first 2 events (at different venues). My guess is maybe too much tire pressure causing the tread to be more rounded rather than flat which causes those middle tread to stick out more? Just a guess. I've never had this problem before so I need a little help figuring this out before I waste the tires.

All RE71R do that. That center rib will wear down like that until there's almost no tread left. It's a character trait.

looks pretty normal especially so for tires with a lot of tread. High camber and not making use of it all can factor in as well (tire is not flattening out in corners).
What does the outside shoulder look like? |

Thanks, I didn't know this and will take a look at other cars during the next race.

The shoulders both inside and out look fine. During our next event I'll put chalk on the outside shoulder to see how much of the tread is being used.

The manufacturer puts an indicator on the tire that tells you exactly where the ideal point of shoulder wear should be. Find the indicator and post it up showing how far above/below it you are.

Sorry, just noticed your post. I am loving them also! My wife has even noticed a difference when she's racing my car and she doesn't care so much about the mechanics, just wants to go fast, lol.

My RE71Rs on my 128i look identical with -3.6 degrees camber and 28psi pressure. They look ugly but it's to be expected and they work fine.
I am thinking about going to BFGs on my next set though - I find that the REs just get too hot on my car with the tire to weight ratio being what it is. -Mark
