I don't know what I was thinking!

I probably shouldn't have compared Xpel 3M film to a vinyl couch cover.
I'm very sorry.

I'm probably going to get xpel installed this weekend. I'm still up in the air about it, but my e46 was absolutely decimated by rocks.

I just emailed my dealer for an estimate...he was bugging me about it yesterday. I don't even know a ballpark here... $300?

*EDIT* He just got back to me... $850 with 4 year warranty(whatever that means.)

That's a bigger iPod AND a Garmin GPS. Hmmm

I've gotten local estimates by independent installers of $550 and $425.

The installers have it good here in the SF Bay Area,,,average prices for an install is $1,500 for a full hood and $1200 for a 'standard' partial hood install. Rest of the things that would be covered for both options are the bumper, fenders, side mirrors.

With prices like these, I am considering trying a self-install.

Is the 399 install for a full hood or partial hood install?

Partial Hood/above front wheels, headlights, and mirrors. Here is a pic post install.

If anyone is interested in the PA area, this was done by Rock Guard in Allentown. 610-428-2969

Hey Guys, I thought I would chime in since i've been installing clear bras for 8 years. The film is a great idea and is def a needed on today's soft paint.

Just a few things I wanted to make clear about the film turning yellow on white cars. It is true a lot of them out there have turned yellow. There are over 5 different film companies out that some turn yellow quicker than others. The turning of colors can be from a poor quality film, the customer didn't take care of the film, and they used a wax that dyed the film yellow.

I own 2 white cars that are just over a year old and I experiement with all films. From what I notice the best longest lasting film that won't turn colors is Clearshield film, followed by 3M. The other 3 that I have on the vehicles are showing discoloration already.

So I would def recommend 1 of the 2 films 3M or Clearshield. Clearshield being my first recommendation. Both films have a strong clearcoat which keeps the film from discoloration. Only difference Clearshield doesn't have any pores in the film which allows it to last a very long time with out any discoloration. Both films come with a 5 year warranty with labor as well. (other films may perform better in different climates.)

In regards to pricing, I would def not go with the cheapest installer around. The cheapest is not the best. I've seen cheap installs with razor marks everywhere. See there work prior as well, installation is key in making the film look great.

Just to give you an idea of what Xpel kits should cost for a good installer - $895 for 24" Hood, Fenders, Mirrors, Headlights and Full Bumper. $1495 for Full Hood, Full Fenders, Mirrors, Headlights and Full Bumper. These are Florida Prices so CA, North and other areas may be slight cheaper or a few hundred More.

Hope this helps.

My friend had 3M installed on his car before delivery for $550 at the BMW dealer. It was not the full hood but partial.

On Detroit freeways the roads are terrible because of all the trucks going into and out of Canada. Rocks and debris get thrown all over. The ClearBra works fabulously and I will personally have it done when I get my 135i.

Thanks Flyinrye95! Mine is in the shop as I type. Full hood, full fenders, front bumper, mirror backs, door handle recesses. $1250. I'll try to get some pictures up tomorrow. They want the car all day.

Goodness. Might as well do the whole car. If you can't see it though, I bet it looks cool.

Thanks Guys. If anyone has any paint film questions let me know I'll be happy to help. I know a lot of people in the industry and can give recommedations.

Full Hood/Fenders is def the way to go especially on these cars. Here are some photos of full Hood/fenders.

http://www.autopaintguard.com/gallery.asp?Make=hood

Also forgot to mention, make sure to use Plexus as the wax for the film. Makes the film very slick and easy to clean.

I installed a clear bar to my mini, full front. I also did a friends BMW and my wifes SUV. The MINI was very hard to do because of all the curves but the other two cars I did went really smoothly. I used 3M on all three cars. I dont recall paying over $300 for any of the kits.

$500-600 is what I was under the impression the going price was for the "standard" clearbra install.

So is this something BMW offers from the dealer? I really want to get this done since all my previous cars have gotten rock chips within the first week of it being brand new!!!

BMW offers it but they can't do an entire hood without a seam. Also they wanted ~$900 for covering about 1/3rd the hood. Pricey.

Anyway my installer didn't do a custom job. They ordered the XPEL kits you see on their website. They did a very good job with the install. The kit is cut to fit right up to the edge of each piece of sheet metal. It doesn't wrap under the metal as some custom jobs look like they've done. It doesn't bother me though because it is cut so close to the edge that it really looks fine.

The only surprise downside is that the plastic has occasional flaws in it that are exposed when putting it on top of a darker paint. There aren't that many but a few. They are about a few millimeters across.

Well worth it though because I already had a small paint chip on a fender.

Awesome. Glad you go the car protected.

Joelk, What kind of film did they use? Shouldn't really be any flaws anywhere. Sometimes during the install you can get stretch marks and sometimes dust.

The Full hood is 53" long, so the only film that you can use that covers the hood in 1 piece is Venture, Xpel Premium and Avery top coat.

Thanks
