I eventually plan on a full S65+everything swap from a donor but gonna rock the humble yet potent N52 for now. So I guess I'm working top down vs bottom up like you are 😄. But thought I'd share my experience getting all these 1M widebody parts.

I found all parts were pretty easy to get. I recommend https://bmw.oempartsonline.com/ (prices are literally ~35% cheaper than going through ECS or walk-in to a local dealership) and choose "Sioux Falls South Dakota" dealership if you can; all others didn't want to ship me the bumpers.

As you probably know the quarter panels are NLA. I recommend steel flares (vs fiber glass) from these guys https://www.steelpanels.co.uk/catego...mw-1series-1m/

Oh, funny enough, the side markers are pretty impossible to find right now. I found a left one on eBay lol. For now, going to rock some cheap knockoffs.

My 1M parts list if helpful below:
- I'm not doing any trunk work for dual exhaust so this list doesn't include those parts; keeping things one sided exit for now (I have an idea for the 1M diffuser).
- Rear bumper only comes with PDC holes I guess so dummy PDC caps are also useful.
- If you need the 'flip/fold' type 1M mirrors they seem NLA too, this guy on eBay has em. I bought em already and this is legit:

kashikoi thanks, really appreciate it. I have been collecting stuff to do the front end, I plan on running the Ex-pressed rear quarters. I still need a lot of parts still and upgrades. I am just enjoying the process and enjoying the car as well.

Been off the forums for a minute boys. Took a little break from the enthusiasm side of life because real life started throwing spinning heel kicks at my head.

But the sickness never fully leaves you.

Finally made a move though, traded in the trusty 128i. Maybe not the fastest dog in the park but it never stopped. Learned a ton with that thing and beat the absolute hell out of it respectfully.

Now I’m officially in a bone stock, 2 owner 135i. Clean history, untouched, no “bro trust me” marketplace mods, no popcorn tune, no Amazon intakes zip-tied to the radiator support. Feels like finding an unmolested artifact at this point.

Driving it home I remembered why this stuff is fun in the first place. The N54 still feels like pure delinquent engineering. You touch the throttle and the car immediately starts making terrible financial decisions for you.

Good to be back.

2011 BMW 128i  [10.00]
2010 BMW 328i  [10.00]
Spent the week putting in a backup camera. Well, that was my intention but ended up with a dashcam/mirror/tailcam/backup cam. Since I purchased Little Red (2011 128i) in 2021, I had used a Garmin GPS with a wireless camera mounted to the rear license plate for a backup camera. Pretty neat system and worked fairly well and is a good option if you don't want to run wires and are okay with a stand-a-lone GPS on your dash. But I put in an Android head unit by CarNaviPlayer a couple of years ago and now use Google Maps through Android Auto so the Garmin GPS was cluttering up the dash solely for the backup camera function. The CarNaviPlayer unit cam with a backup camera - one of those for BMWs that replaces the trunk release handle, a very neat OEM-looking solution. This week I finally got around to attempting to install it and there was no joy - I could not get it to work. I've installed several backup cameras in other cars and always been successful but not with this one. There were no instructions with it so I was operating on general knowledge of these systems, along with instructions for similar ones I'd installed in the past, but I could not get it to work. Double-checked and triple-checked all connections, even tried installing other versions of this style I had on the shelf (one I pulled off another car when I sold it but one I have no recollection of how and when I acquired it), but no luck. It may be something about the head unit. On the Dynavin Android unit I had in my old E91 Touring, you had to go into the settings and had to activate a rear camera but I could not find anything like that for the CarNaviPlayer.

So, I started looking at mirror style cameras - I had done one of those for my son's car a few years ago and he likes it. Found some on Ebay that use the BMW trunk release handle camera but those are backup camera only and cost as much, if not more, than some of the fancy dashcam/rearcam mirror setups. I figured this would allow me to declutter some more by eliminating the current dash cam. First one I ordered was a Wolfbox G840S but as soon as I opened it I could tell the 12 inch wide mirror would be too big for Little Red. So, returning that one. Then ordered a Wolfbox G930 with a 10" mirror and that one is a better fit.

I've got the rear camera mounted with a magnet right now and will see if that works well enough. If not I will have to figure out some other mounting system, perhaps a plate or something off of the license plate mount - trying to avoid drilling any holes. The cable is routed through the trunk release handle - I drilled a hole high up inside it, just large enough to fit the cable through. I think it is weather-protected enough but if it becomes necessary I can fill it with a dab of silicone.

Right now the power cord is connected with a series of adapters as the power cord I already had hardwired for the old dash cam is a USB Mini and the mirror is USB C. I have a better adapter on the way from the Big A. I've also ordered a bracket that will replace the original mirror and that the Wolfbox mirror mounts to for a cleaner look than strapping it to the existing mirror. Only possible issue is whether the bracket can be adapted to fit BMW's odd trangle mount. There is an adapter that may work and I've ordered it, but info on it has been contradictory. Crutchfield says it will not fit BMW, but several posts on different forums say it does, it looks as though it does, but one poster said it fit but not snugly enough (I suspect this poster may not have it properly seated, which can be tricky. Hey, returns are easy so I rolled the dice.
Anyway, went out for a drive this morning to a shopping center where I could use the parking lot lines to adjust the reverse guidelines and it worked great.

Not welding my flares for a little while but had to take a peek inside to see how I was going to handle work on the inner wheel well. So did a rough opening of the cavity today. I figure I'll be cutting off any flash rust when I do the final cut to be able to butt the new flares up against the quarter panels.

Looks like I can keep the inner flare mostly intact (cleaning up my wild cuts there first of course), then weld a strip or strips between inner flare and inside of new flare.

1M wheel well lining seems to follow the curvature of the narrow body inner flare pretty well for the most part. I may consider cutting more of the inner flare off to flatten out its curvature a little more so that the 1M lining can tuck into the new flare. There is a nipple thing popping out of the lining there on the left so I'll probably angle my strip up 45 degrees or so as needed to avoid hitting it. I'm assuming that nipple is a mounting point so will maybe weld or panel bond some sort of stud at an angle for the lining to bolt onto; other mounting points on the inner side actually match up well with the stock studs.

Fixed the paint under the hood (Likely poor prep from an old paint repair),

Headlights swapped out to aftermarket "OEM" halogens

put the summer wheels back on.

I still want to find a second set of 261 fronts or rears to make a square set,,,,,,

Also swapped in new clutch pedal bushings - do not waste your time, at 150k they were near-as-makes-no-difference to the old ones.

Car is finally an absolute pleasure!
What an awesome update, cerealwars ! Glad you finally have things sorted out and are happy.

How do the clutch pedal effort and chatter level compare with the ACT?

Door Seals

I replaced my door seals with new OEM units, pretty simple procedure, but I have a question for the vets that have done this before:

The channel along the headliner isn't as tight as it was with the old seal. Am I missing something? I can't imagine it's installed improperly?

To follow up, I'd only installed the passenger side when I posted this. I installed the driver side and the fit is much better. I'll try reinstalling the passenger seal from scratch one more time before I determine if the seal is defective, or the installer is .

Well rubber over time shrinks, so that could be a reason it sits tighter.
