The 1 series and dogs
Hey guys,
This is my first thread here but I've done a lot of reading and research on this forum and you guys seem to be a great resource for these cars! So next week I'm supposed to be getting my 135i (super stoked!) and I've been trying to figure out a solution for my buddy Enzo. Before this car I used to have a 2007 GTI 5 door so it wouldn't be a problem, he would get in the back and stick his head out the window just fine. I'm not entirely sure what type of setup I should have for him in the 1, though, especially with the 2 seater in the back. I was thinking of getting two thick pillows and wrapping them with blankets or something, to fill in the void. Any dog owners with solutions? I would really appreciate it! Some pics of the soon-to-be-car and my dog. Thanks! |

Google "dog car seat protector" and you will see hundreds of options for hammocks for the back seat. My wife bought one for her Honda CRV and I thought it was pretty lame until we used it. It's worked out great. I had to modify it though, by sewing in a strap to run between the seat back and seat. I tie the strap to a D ring on the floor behind the seat. This keeps it tight and keeps the hammock from sliding forward and letting the dog fall between the back and front seats. I guess you can find one for a smaller car.

These two don't have any problems fitting in the back. I ended up making something simmilar to the BMW seat cover and saved some money, but it was alot of work with the wifes sewing machine. I've thought about stuffing something in the rear seat footwell, but haven't done it yet. Pillows are a good idea. I also reccomend this: http://www.ruffrider.com/ It's done well keeping the dogs in place on mountain roads.

Pet smart has a seat cover that slips over the seat it has holes in it for the head rest and for the seat belts. It is a tough fabric. It reminds me of the stuff they put on the sides of a freight elevator. This is so the dogs don't slide around. It has some clever straps and a piece you just push into the bottom of the seat back that holds it in place.

That's a lot of great suggestions! We don't have a Pet Smart in Montréal but I'm sure I can find a cheaper solution. I'll see what my dealer can do on it, if they have them. I definitely would rather then OEM since it looks like it fits perfectly.
My dog would not like the doggy seatbelt thing, he gets restless as it is with a leash Cute dogs and awesome cars! Thanks for sharing. |

Question...
I know this is silly, but I am going to ask anyway... Because our back seat fold down (both sides), could one remove the trunk lid, and drive around without it... If you had a dog, on a leash it could pop it's head out the trunk while you drive. Just a thought for a "pet-cool-mod".... Silly but any thoughts? EspressoBoy |

The pic on United's site is my car. It does look good, even with the grey on coral... better then I thought it would. It fits like it was stock, perfect.
My dog (a good size lab) didn't like the back seat due to the plastic between the seats (just a guess). The cover has a bit of padding on the back, which was just enough... now he doesn't mind it at all. The best part about the cover, it can be removed in just a few seconds (and put in the bag that comes with it) and passengers can seat on a dog hair free seat. Also, it can be vacuumed like a flat carpet when its removed. Easy! Great item, I do reccomend! The downside of the 1 and a big dog: You have to let him in & out via the front seat. I tried moving the front seat fwd to let him in, but a) it's a small opening, b) it's seems impossible for him to NOT step on the metal rail for the front seat. Whatever the reason, he was apprehensive about getting in that way. Via the front, he hops right in. Every day we walk to the driveway, he still makes a b-line right to the pick-up, lol. |
