I think we will try to plan something for late summer - maybe in Sept or August... and that tour will be open for anyone who wants to come join us. It 's really hard once we get over a handfull of cars, to stay together and travel with. Finding hotels that can cater to 25+ cars is hard work. So maybe by having two events this year - it will be better off.

I can totally understand that. I'll go to Switzerland myself at the beginning of June for Albula and Fluela Pass, so I think I can manage to wait till august/september!

Have fun though!

Artemis yup, i did the French Alps in May back in 2014 and had pretty much all the passes to myself. Sometimes driving for hours before seeing another car, only downside, the highest of the passes, not quite open

I can't do the June one as much as I really want to do it but I am waiting for the planning of the later one because I can definitely make that one.

Nope. I would have posted something.

Actually some of us will be meeting soon and discussing more details about our late summer tour. Possibly in September. Not sure where we will be driving. Probably Northern Italy me thinks.

For me, 2nd, 3rd or 4th weekend in September. August is a no go for me, as i'm on holiday in Austria.

Very likely Sella 3.0 (2016) was the best of all 5 editions (Stelvio & Sella).

Unlike previous years, nothing has been scheduled so far by anyone (timing, location, maps, hotel, logistics). And it usually takes quite some preparation, mostly by the same people (all done for free - no sponsoring or organization behind). Maybe a tell-tale sign for a 'sabbatical' this year.

If you're interested to visit the area: previous editions may get you some inspiration for planning your journeys.

No worries. I'll just make sure i really enjoy myself in 4 weeks time in Switzerland, Italy and Austria

I spend weeks / months planning my trips, so know how much effort it takes to plan and organise.

Trouble is finding people who are up for driving 2-3000 miles in 8 days

Some 'Sella Ronda' news.

This year, access is restricted each Wednesday of July (5, 12, 19 and 26) and August (2, 9, 16, 23 and 30) at Sella Pass / Passo Sella / Sellajoch of 'Sella Ronda' between 9am and 4pm for vehicles with combustion engine. This pilot project was baptized "Dolomiti Green Days" and the chance exists that this experiment may be expanded in the future for longer periods and several Dolomites areas. Other passes remain unrestricted for now.
"On Wednesdays in July and August from 9 am to 4 pm, the Sella mountain pass will be closed to vehicles that burn fossil fuels. Only electric vehicles, bikes, pedestrians, public buses and quarry transport will be permitted to use the road.
The street will be closed at the turn-off from Passo di Sella and Passo Gardena, after the hotel Miramonti, to Pian de Schiavaneis.
Thanks to events featuring great food, music and story telling about the Dolomites, guests can experience the mountain world with all their senses.
To avoid inconveniences, there will be new bus connections between Val di Fassa and Val Gardena. Every Wednesday there will be two extra zero emission bus lines. Every 15 minutes there will be two connections to Passo Sella. One from Plan de Gralba and one from Pian de Schiavaneis. Furthermore, there will be another bus, which goes hourly from Corvara to Pass Sella then Canazei and back."
Keep this in mind if you consider driving the Sella Pass this Summer.

Nah, not a biggie.

We'll just drive the Passo Campolongo in the other direction instead!

I remember last year they were thinking about banning certain vehicles, but don't remember them mentioning any days / dates / times.

Also be mindful of the cameras in those orange and stainless steel boxes. The speed limit is only 50 kph on Sella Ronda... but we all drive much faster than that. The speed limit is only posted when you first get onto the pass - so they are kind of sneaky. Those orange camera boxes are easy enough to see at the beginning and end of each village... but there are a few places on the pass were you might see a stainless steel box... it's no fun getting a "Sella Selfie" a year later! Yup, the Italians have up to a year to send you the ticket.

You can ride a bike.

Otherwise: Passo Sella is open for your car till 9am and opens again at 4pm. If you drive an i3 or Tesla: no restrictions. Other three passes of Sella Ronda (Passo Val Gardena / Grödnerjoch, Passo Pordoi / Pordoijoch and Passo Campolongo): no restrictions.

Speed on Italian passes varies between 50 and 90 km/h (and of course lower if there are roadworks). Sometimes it's pretty amazing that 90 km/h is allowed in some twisties. Just keep an eye on the speed signs. Can be a bit confusing when you accidentally overlooked a sign, so BMW "Speed Limit Info" is of great help. However, do mind that the speed limit is always limited to 50 km/h when you enter a town. Lots of Italian (small) towns have those typical orange blitzers right at the entrance and exit of town. Obviously visible because required by Italian law this way.

On mountain passes I rarely see steel Autvelox blitzers - you rather find those on some highways and main roads. On main Italian highways there is often also the 'Tutor' system, which measures your average speed over a specific distance (if active) (overhanging steel constructions/bridges with black panels).

However, a special word of caution about the epic Giau Pass (Passo di Giau: located between Pocol and Selva di Cadore - near Cortina d'Ampezzo). It's my favorite pass of the Dolomites and its impressive mountain top is hallmark Dolomites. It's a gem. I enjoy driving this calm pass more than driving the hyped and overcrowded Stelvio Pass (Passo dello Stelvio). When driving the Giau Pass in the Southern direction (i.e. from Pocol to Selva di Cadore), I have not encountered yet any blitzer. However, right beyond the top a sneaky surprise awaits you in Summertime: within the first minute or so when you crossed the top, more particularly between turns #24 and #23 (heading Southbound), you will very likely encounter a blitzer on the left ...and within less than another minute you encounter a second one. It almost certainly serves the purpose to trick all cars and motorbikes who go 'pedal-to-the-metal' once they passed the first blitzer. So beware of expensive 'selfies' right after the top of Passo di Giau. I noticed several times that outside the Summer season both blitzers have vanished ...and return for the Summer season (at least the one closest to the top, sometimes also the second one).

Jeez, i'm really going to have to pay attention!

Never had to worry about foreign speed cameras until May this year.

Thanks for the heads up.
