Question LSD Conversion Kit - Details and Group Buy

Alright so I've secured a deal with these guys to get a kit for testing in my car. In turn, I'm providing a detailed installation video as well as a review and followup videos of "testing" the kit in action.

They've been responsive, helpful and very fair and I'm personally very curious to see how this works out.

In addition to this deal, They're willing to organize a group buy for us:
  • 5-10 units will make them just $240/set
  • 10+ units they'll do $200/set!!

Those prices include shipping as well. Please think about it and vote below, keep in mind I'm not getting paid for this and if I think the kit is crap, I'll say so.

If you have any questions you'd want answered in a review, post them up!

i'd be interested too, but i'm still a little new at this whole aftermarket LSD thing.

- is this a clutch-based LSD?
- would it work on an auto car? (don't roast me for this ok it's a DD)
- would it be harder to ship to canada?

Is this thing basically an aggressive "2-way"? Automatic 328i's are a dime a dozen in junkyards... I might pick up another diff for science.

The main thing I'm worried about is failure - how will it fail and will it be on the highway going 80?

Good on ya for setting this up. You really need 2 test mules. A 135i & a 128i. Get them installed, take em to the track, & drive them around the street.

Failure in normal driving is likely to be benign and manifest simply as a loss of LS functionality, as the most likely failure point I can see is the friction surfaces. In track use, it's theoretically possible you could break a spring or something, but you'd need a lot more power to do so unless the springs are made of soft cheese.

The big unknown is the durability of the friction surfaces. It will take some testing time to figure that out. I'd love to see micrometer measurements and visual comparisons of the friction areas after a few thousand miles.

Alright guys so here's the deal, the manual 135i's require machining to the crown ring and internal gears for this kit to work since the ring is welded to the diff. The LOE on this is too high for it to be worth it for me.

The company is still willing to offer a FREE kit to someone who is willing to step up and do this job, and then provide a detailed install video as well as a video for testing and review.

If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the owner.

Buy a proven quality lsd, none of this makes sense to me unless your really hard up for cash= and then I would suggest revaluating priorities.

What's the story with other drivetrain configurations? Is there a setup for which this is essentially drop-in, or do they all require machine work?

Yep N54 autos have bolted ring gears. You can swap them into a 128i if you use the rear half of the 135i driveshaft

As God intended they should be...

There's a video out there someplace of a shop cutting the ring gear off. Easy enough to do if you have very expensive tools....
