New DD to go with my 1M

Well, after searching high and low for something fun to daily within my budget of under $15K, I found this older throwback gem!

1997 e36 M3 Sedan with 95k miles and previously owned by an old timer for 20 years.

So, what other BMW's do you guys daily? I know, I know...I could daily the 1M. However, that's my special weekend only car

Nice! Love those. I daily a manual 2004 330i ZHP Sedan. I like 4 doors with 2 kids for daily. It's been a great combination and despite the massive torque difference these old Normally aspirated cars hold their own with great steering feel and sound. Congrats!

Nicely done!
My current daily is an x5. I loved it when I leased it, but it is boring. I'm over it. I return it in March.

New M2cs is on its way and will be a 3-season daily, with my e30 325e and GMC truck sharing the winter duties.

I don't daily drive anything; I walk about 2/3 of my days, which I really prefer :-)

If you are talking about a car you can depend on, then to me that means a newer car with a warranty! Of course, if you are in a city and not going outside of it, then you can just call an uber if you need it, so you could DD a Model T.

Beautiful. Just sold my E36 M3 actually and 1M sits in the garage. I daily an 07 Corolla 5 speed..... Super boring but nothing ever breaks on it lol. Been on the hunt for a clean 330i ZHP as that was the best daily I ever had.

I agree 330i ZHP best daily for me. Just picked up second one after previous one rear ended. Great daily driver

Yep! Love the ZHP!

Certainly one of the best DD from BMW.

I couldn't pass up on this e36 M3 tho and for the price....what a bargain!

Considering I almost settled for a pre-owned Honda Accord to get around town with, this was several thousand cheaper and way more fun to drive as well as having a ton of character 😎

Watching this thread and wondering why a 128i 6-speed isn't in the mix for a daily driver? Practically bullet-proof and certainly already a platform you appreciate. I have one and so does my wife (automatic because of arthritic knee!).

Her's replaced a 260,000 mile '98 528i. Mine replaces a '95 525i stick I took off the road to restore (some day) and replaced with an '85 535i stick. It's just hard to recommend something that old as a daily when the E82 are so cheap . . . but also on the rise.

Awesome!

Definitely great cars that you can't go wrong with.

I was actually looking for something a bit old school....so, was a toss up between an e30 or e36.

Fun cars with a ton of character 😃

I looked a long time for a manual no nav 128i and there were so few in decent shape. Many had the SULEV motor too so just not a lot to choose from if you want a manual. If you want an automatic, sure plenty of those. I gave my son my old 2003 ZHP manual. It will probably be the only manual he ever owns but I wanted him to experience that himself and rise the challenge of learning to drive. Now he does and frankly if he never owns a manual again, I'm fine with it but it won't be because he doesn't know how to drive it. So manual it is. Now when we discuss driving, he knows what I mean about the satisfaction of a good shift!

I chose my wife's '08 with Nav only because it also had PDK. The 1-button iDrive controller sucks but I'm used to it and she just closes the pop-up screen mostly.

My '13 with later fixed screen and multi-button iDrive control is great. I can't stand operating the radio or telephone in the small radio/MIDI screen. It's just awful. Other than having to update the maps, the system works great for Bluetooth, offers Music Collection hard-drive, and a much better interface for anything I'm doing in the car.

I was at the initial launch of iDrive at the Frankfurt Auto Show and I'm not as much a hater now on the Nth generation as I was then. Obviously all other manufacturers have followed suit but no one does an interface as well as BMW now. Don't limit your search!

I'm surprised you feel that way. I take driving very seriously as an autocrosser the first thing I ever did was move my mirror out of the way as I headed out. I fell in love with the submarine orange displays in the E46 which were geared for serious night driving and center window controls that allowed you to roll down windows while keeping your left hand on the wheel and vision centerline. BMW put the hump and screen on top reducing visibility and focus on actually driving not to mention decreasing night vision. For a company that focused on driving dynamics, this was a 180 degree turn on driving focus and night vision towards city texting and driving. I think the BMW system is awful in that respect if you take driving seriously especially long road trips at night etc. Finally, we also own a Mk VII GTI which has the screen just below the dashline and I find it to be more suited for for the type of driving I described. It is not too bright, not intrusive when looking over the dash and it groups real buttons for digital categories. I saw that the Cayman system is placed similarly. Perhaps VW owns Porsche, not sure but for me the VW system is simpler and less distracting. It gives you all the gadgets with a significantly less intrusion into the line of sight for serious drivers.

Hmm, maybe I'm tall enough that it just doesn't bother my outward visibility. To each their own. But if I'm actually going to use the media system or phone while driving, I much prefer the LCI iDrive version over the non-nav system. I'll take the Music Collection hard-drive as a bonus.

Tesla M3P for me, VW GTI DSG for the wife. Only take the 1M out in this season when no snow/no salt/no traffic.

Came here to say I just use the 1M as my daily, but in 2020 that's ended up being about 1000 miles total...

Nice congrats! I also have an AW e36 M3 to go with my AW 1M. My DD is a F97 X3M and e90 335D. Also just picked up another E82 135i AW for a possible track car haven't decided yet.
