Snap-in Adapter Removal?

Apologies if this is discussed elsewhere, but I can't find it. Anybody got a tip or two for how to remove an E82 armrest snap-in adapter (without breaking things)? Not just the top plate, but the whole unit? There's a bunch of what sounds like change rattling around in the bowels of my armrest and I can't imagine getting to it without pulling the adapter. I find a thread on doing this with an X3, but the hardware is different.
