Well, immediately after break-in, the 1er and I will be blasting up Dead Indian to Howard Prairie Lake then back, about 50 miles of rural twisties. On another day, a high-speed sortie across Green Springs Hwy to Klamath Falls, about 100 miles of rural twisties with stretches of isolated high-speed straightaways. Lots of great roads here in southern Oregon.

Where will you drive first?

Hey guys,

Where will your first real drive be after you pick up your 1? I know mine will be headed down route 61 following the Great River Road along the Mississippi here in Minnesota...a beautiful drive through rolling hills on a fairly twisty road. I'm also digging back through all the Winding Road issues to start planning some road trips, they showcase some great roads.....So where are you going?

Where a BMW can be a BMW

My virgin drive will be out of BMW Welt to the Autobahn! And I know about the break in period, so I will have a second round after making my way back up from Italy, because by then I will have almost 800 miles on my 1er! Then it's Autobahn all the way to Amsterdam!

Atlantic City and Back, Boston and Back, should be 1,000 miles after that, and the break in period will be done.

I'd think the Tail of the Dragon is best served for after you break the car in.

I'll be taking the "High Road to Taos", up into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Here's an eTrails description:

A 70-mile scenic back road from Santa Fe to Taos that passes through old Spanish villages and the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The fastest and most popular route between Santa Fe and Taos follows the Rio Grande Valley through Española. However, the High Road described here is more scenic and has a much smaller, although growing, volume of traffic. It’s easy to take a full day for the drive, browsing in Chimayo shops, photographing the old churches, or hiking in the Pecos Wilderness. Special attractions: Weavers in Chimayo, historic churches in Chimayo, Las Trampas, and Ranchos de Taos, Indian pueblos, Carson National Forest, Pecos Wilderness, Santa Fe, Taos, views, hiking, camping.

I won't be browsing any shops or camping though. I'll be letting those twin turbos suck in that thin, high altitude air and compress the hell out of it!

Probably up Hwy 50 (curvy) to Lake Tahoe, then up 395 to Susanville and back down Hwy 32 (really curvy) to Chico then back home to Sacramento. About 400 miles.

I haven't been yet, but from what I've seen and read, high-revving isn't needed or even advised on the Tail of the Dragon. It's all about the the twisties. Should be no break-in issues.

I'll let you know in exactly 6 weeks, though. From Spartanburg, I'll be heading up into NC to go up & back down the Tail of the Dragon (at least once), then crossing into Tennessee on the Cherohala Skyway in my way back to Dallas.

This seed was planted in my head when we talked about this a few weeks ago in this thread.

My first drive will have great family significance, but no real drivers significance. My wife has spent the last 2 years studying at all hours for an MBA. She is graduating in the afternoon of the day I pick up my car. So my first drive will be bringing her, gowned up and in splendid newness to her graduation ceremony.

A special moment for us and the car I think you will agree.

Hey Cracka...have you scheduled a date for pick-up at the Performance Center yet? I was just curious because we're definitely going to hit the Dragon on the way back too. I'm scheduled for pick-up on Thursday the 27th so first thing Friday morning....Dragon, here we come!!

My car will get a complete clean:
- clay bar to remove the cheap BMW wax
- Poorboys Vanilla Moose Handglaze
- Clearkote UXP Sealent
- Zymol Creame Wax

Followed by lots of pics.

Then I have got lots of business trips to run her in before going Boxster baiting and driving like I stole it across the countryside

Really wish I was driving my new 1er along PCH!!

I love LaLa!!

Once I get the engine broken in, I'm heading to Radium BC through the Rocky Mountains on highway 93. That's about as close to European style driving as you'll find here.
