larryn..I agree

However, my experience with the BMW M/T's has been that the 1-2 shift feels much more "nothcy' than the other gears. Of course if I knew why we could fix this.

I replaced the selector rod in my E46 , with the UUC made what they called a DSSR (Double Slotted Selector Rod) thinking that this would do the trick. The original design was very poor (unlike BMW).

This did make the shifter fell tighter, however, it did nothing for the notchiness.

At any rate....all I've been trying to say is that this is not a new issue relating to the E82's.

I want my 1addicts sticker and I want it now.....

LOL!! It appears you didn't get in on the initial offering for them. The ones we have right now are spoken for (for the time being). Those who do not claim them soon are going to forfeit them to people who actually do want them, like Mr. e34m5!!

I ordered more late last night, but those won't be available for a bit... and they won't be notchy.

I guess I asked this b4? Maybe it was 4:15am when I get up, or 6:45pm when I get home. I don't recall. :iono:

I just figured ANY changes might void warranty on trans. :iono:

Would the CDV slow the release of the clutch as well as the engagement? Works both ways?

It affects the re-engagement of the clutch. The idea being that with the CDV there is less chance of dumping the clutch.

Jeff, changing the trans oil to AMSOIL made my Si silky smooth through all the gears.

My 1->2 shift in every BMW I have ever owned has been a tad notchy until about 5K.

Changing/Removing the CDV will definitely help. When you do a fast shift, the slight clutch lag may increase the notchy feeling.

I found that while sitting at a light with my foot on the brake, if I test shift from Neutral to 1st to 2nd, the first transition from 1st to 2nd is notchy. But, if I repeat the same action a 2nd time, it is much, much smoother. I find that the only way to consistently get a smooth gear change from 1st to 2nd is to release the clutch about 3/4-1 second, rather than just let it out quickly and match with the accelerator. I know that this is technically "riding the clutch" and I shouldn't be doing it. Any tips?

It is really frustrating, and I'm embarrassed when I've got people in the car!

Hmm if this is the case with the manual...should the Steptronic be the transmission of choice for the 135i? If the manual is difficult to go from 1st - 2nd <the majority of shifting>, should people just go with the step?

By notchy I mean the shifter doesn't seem to want to go into 2nd gear quickly or easily. I dunno if notchy is or is not the correct term for that. None of the other gears really feel like that.

The MT is fine. We need to get some miles on these cars.

Interesting. Yesterday, I noticed what felt lilke a synchro issue when I shifted into 2nd. This was the first time I noticed it, but with the car being so new, I didn't know what to make of it. It happened in 2nd just like you mentioned. I was going slow at a residential intersection... so there was no high speed involved.

The sensation was not at the clutch, as some have been focusing on. The sensation was clearly felt within the shift lever... like a synchro issue... and it was ONLY in 2nd gear.

Yesterday was the first and only time I noticed it, but I am very clear that it happened. I do not have an explanation, nor am I looking for one at this time. I am presently not that concerned about it.

I am simply reporting this as an honest reply to the original question. It happened to me, too.

um...you're kidding right? no stick = no fun. the thing is that people who don't know how to drive a stick well, and i used to be one of these people, just don't realize what they are missing. i suspect that is why you're suggesting the slushmatic.

but I have a feeling the transmission isn't as bad as people are making out to be. the Mz4's have bad transmissions on the other hand - they grind.

Careful. I have been driving MT's for the better part of 40 years.

You're answer is very pretentiuos. I do indeed know how to drive a stick very well. Many driving schools under my belt. I can assure you that the MT in the BMW is a bit cantankerous going into second.

Quite frankly I got tired of MT in traffic. I test drove a 335i step prior to making my decision. I found it more than adequate for the job and so I ordered one.

So unless you have experience first hand, and by the info about you it appears you do not even own a BMW, I suggest you keep some of those comments to yourself.

I was about to post the same thing. I've got decades of MT experience... and I'm very good at it. I've driven some great cars with MT.

So I guess the question is...are you guys sorry you got the 135i in a MT after dealing with this or is this being overblown.

Overblown. It's annoying but not a deal breaker.

It's not really an issue at all. I was just wondering if it was normal.

Way overblown. I experienced it one time. I wouldn't have an autotragic becuase of this. Just love the MT. It is silky, yet positive, almost all of the time.
