power steering pump restrictor

anyone fitted a power steering pump restrictor ? They make these for other brands but I have not found one for the 135i yet, turnone makes a bunch

I find the 135i steering over boosted, the ratio does not bother me but the lack of feeling compared to my other track car (r53 mini) does bother me

I had no idea such a thing existed? Is it just a flow restrictor ...sort of a clutch delay valve for the PS pump?

Looks like a simple banjo bolt with a smaller orifice would work.

Any one have a banjo bolt they can measure thread size and length for me?

any idea the orifice size needed?

If I can source a suitable bolt and modify on my lathe to make a banjo out of it tht would be a cool project.

I may pull mine as i need to flush anyways and i have the under tray off.

*****************

after doing some research I don't think it as simple as installing a smaller orifice to pump though. But if anyone can educate me I have the tools to try it. I think you'd probably overwork the pump and rob HP. The answer is likely reducing pressure with an internal pump modification.

No idea if that is possible. Happy to take a used one apart if someone has one.

It's built into the line.
No need for another.

No you don't. All it's going to do is cause more problems.

The problem is you. You need to understand that this is not a mini. It will never be and no matter what mods you try to do to it it will always driver differently. That's the point.

Every time I jump in a FWD vs a RWD I envy the steering response of the FWD. But that's because of the inherent difference with driven wheel. No amount of tire or alignment will ever change that.

If you really need the middleground you'll have to go AWD (not Subaru).

uhh no, my e30s turned nice the only problem with the 135i rack is it's over assisted. I thought about doing the M rack but a restrictor would do the job

another option is a motorsports electric pump

I forgot to mention, my wife just bought a 2019 toyota 86 TRD edition, as you probably know they are rwd like the 135i. The steering while electric offers more feedback as it's not as overly assisted like the e82 is. FWD/RWD does not matter if the power steering pump belongs on a buick

I can make the restrictor....probably just sleeve and redrill the banjo bolt.

But is "A smaller hole" really going to work? Or will it just sap power from the pump, wear out the belt faster, over heat the fluid, etc?

The units on the referred page are actually feeding back to a pressure regulator in most cases...and that changes the pressure output.

I can order a spare banjo and try this if I can get some idea that I won't be damaging the pump. Anyone know???

bmw added a restrictor into the e36 m3 return line where it goes into the ps reservoir, my plan was to do the same thing

I also found where people cut vanes out of the power steering pump itself, that sounds kinda risky

picture of the e36 restrictor, people change the line and then the steering is too light, because replacement lines do not come with the restrictor

Well that makes it super easy to swap out.

I'd leave the barbs off and make it slip fit then clamp it.

Worth a try if BMW did it...

Although it appears that was not the M3 dudes problem.

Run wider tires with lower offsets... 135i hydraulic steering produces a pretty damn heavy steering wheel once you actually put some halfway decent wheels up front. The M3 rack can be had for <$300 and will definitely make the wheel much heavier while giving a quicker ratio.

Any chance you can verify if there is such a restrictor in the return line of an E82? I'd love to pop that sucker out to make my steering a bit lighter... Get some 9-10" wheels with low offsets and 255+ rcomps on your car and you might change your mind too.

Reading the post above about tires & offset (which I agree with), I was reminded that I've felt steering feel change before / after an alignment. I wouldn't say an alignment is a fix, but I'd definitely be certain it's where you want it before doing any other work.

Op you do know there were TWO steering systems for the 135i Normal rack and Active steering rack. The later has over boosted steering at low speeds, less steering angle equals more actual steering angle(at the wheels). And at higher speeds less steering assist with a more linear feel.

I was going to type the same but I think only 128's got active steering and European models at that? can't remember specifically. But yeah first gen of BMW EPS was pretty lackluster. Latest G-series bmw's got it a bit better from what I've read.

Mine does not have active steering.

I have 17x9 245 square RS4's for track use and on the street i run stock wheels with 235/255

I put coilovers on last weekend, car has max negative camber with 0 toe front and 1/16th total toe in rear, I do not have a way to add castor but adding more would increase steering effort

M3 control arms add caster and camber...

It was an option on 135i's only. 128i's don't have the weight, and weren't intended to have the tire up front to really need extra assist.
