Hood Release/latch not working

I changed the oil in my car the other day and noticed when I pulled the hood lever it did not feel like their was very much tension on the handle. So after I closed the hood I tried to re-open it, hood would not pop. I got it open after pushing down on the hood and the latch released. I know it has to be the cable thats loose so I was wondering if their is an adjustment for that cable?

This actually happened to me twice but if you still have warranty then you're covered.

Unfortunately, I am out of warranty. I'll find a way to tighten that cable though!

It could be that the release cable is going to break.

My E36 had that problem, then the cable broke at the release lever in the car... The cable cost about $35, but the labor to replace it (independent repair shop) brought the total to over $300...

Wow! Well I'm I glad I can probably do it myself! That labor is simply insane!

I've had the same issue, try to lubricate the cable. After a while it gets stuck and it will break due to the friction.

Yup, the repair guy had to remove the driver's side headlight to give him room to fish the cable around things and eventually into the interior... Not a simple task.

Just buy a new cable! There is no adjustment.

Luckily the bmw cable comes in two sections and is relatively easy to replace. At least it was on my e39!

I had this happen to me when I installed my boost gauge. I was able to pop the hood pretty easy by removing the driver side grille and popping the latch with a screwdriver. Actually frightening how easy it is to access the 135 engine...

If you follow the cable from the latch there is a small box that it leads into. I openend this small box to find that the cable is actually two pieces and this box joins them. My cable cam unseated somehow and this was a very easy fix.

Hope that helps!

Hey guys, sorry to dig up an old thread, my searching has brought me here. Got an 08 135i and the hood release handle has absolutely no tension to it. I'm sure its the cable, so now I need to replace it and I'm wondering. Is there a way to pop the hood without it? I don't want to break a kidney grill. Any help would be appreciated

You can pop the hood with a screw driver from the kidney without removing them
Happen to me 2 weeks ago on the left side of the engine bay there is a small "box" where the cable splits open it and check if the cable are still connected
In my case the cable wasn't connected to the "box " anymore

Creps you are my new favorite person. Is there a cable-replacement DIY around here now? I could potentially save $250 now

I had the issue with the plastic box too. The cable that connects to it from the interior gets pulled through into the box, having the outside plastic wrinkle. I recommend replacing both cables because the plastic box and its place holder pins get bent

The cable it self is fine. I had to fabricate a new connection to the box using an end of a metal pen & some filing of cable plastic and some metal shielding. Saved $20+ for a few more months perhaps longer

I don't have the no tension in the handle issue. But what I do have is a hood that doesn't open when I pull the lever. The lever feels like its gonna snap. It's so thin! I'll check the cable connections though and see if that is the issue but I don't think it is. I have to pull the handle once. Go out and push the hood. Then pull the handle again. Sometimes I have to wedge something in the handle to hold it open while I push down the hood.

I had a hood release problem today. Absolutely no tension in the release handle. There was initially until I accidentally put more force than necessary and the handle just lost all tension but the hood didn't release. I was able to open the hood through the kidney grill. I took a look at the plastic box and it is kind of out of shape. Also I noticed that from the box to the latch, there is a cable that seems to be "looser" than it should be. I would take a picture, but my hood is closed now. It's a black cable that goes through a hole just over the headlight on the drivers side. Anyone know if there is a DIY or step by step on how to replace the front portion of the cable?

Guys I had the same problem it's easy to open pull out the left grill and pull on the wire with your hand and it will pop open that's what I did. And then sprayed dw40 on the lock mechanism that hold the hood down. And never had issue again
