The current M3 would be a good benchmark for the 1M/M1, though the M variant of the 1 probably still won't have the high rpm capabilities of the current M3.

I bet BMW raises the base price (of $58,400) on that car. It's getting somewhat ridiculous.

Not sure about that, it's always been ridiculous.

When we first got the E30 M3 it was very expensive, I believe $35k in 1989 which was a lot of money, especially for a 4 cylinder car. Then the E36 M3 with the US spec motor was very sensible, I think $39k base price when first introduced, but the 1994 Canadian spec with the Euro-spec version was C$ 60k. Then the E46 M3 came with the exotic engine and was a pretty stiff $47k in 2001.

So all M3's with the M-only motors have been expensive. Very expensive.

And the current M3 is not $58k, it's $55k (like mine).

Base price of:
  • 135i = $36K
  • 335i cp = $43K
  • 335is cp = $50K
  • M3 cp = $58K
I think base price of M1 will probably be around $45K.

Different markets different prices I suppose. And I thought Canadian prices were high.

Yup at 3% inflation compounded, the new base price for M3 should be 61k

I was thinking, and since this is an engine speculation thread... what if it is a V6 configuration? Yes you heard me.. VEE, not inline.

Flame suit... on.

i don't know if this has been mentioned, but i just read this article on BMW "not ruling out" making a X4 and an X4M to compete with the new Land Rover.

here's the bit about the engine...

"According to Autocar, Land Rover may have started something with its LRX Evoque. The site claims that BMW may be looking to broaden its X lineup with the addition of an X4 - which would predictably fall just above the X3 and below the X5 - to do battle with the new low-riding Land Rover. Odds are that where Land Rover and BMW trod, others soon will follow. Autocar even goes on to say that an X4 would make it easy for the company to roll out an X4 M, complete with a 350-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbo I6 borrowed from the upcoming 1 Series M Coupe. Yes, it would probably sell like hotcakes, even if we can see no reason to blast the X stable into ever finer divisions."

If this becomes true, I'll delete my account on this forum and remove the M badges from my M Coupe. What's next, an M SUV? Oh, wait...
