I sill have my '08 that is getting close to crossing over 47k. I just replaced my water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt, tensioner, pulleys, and oil filter housing gaskets as well.

2013 135i here. Knocking on 94,000 miles. Obviously way out of warranty coverage. Only thing I still have left is the factory maintenance extension I bought giving 8 years and 100k of coverage. We'll see if I reach the next service intervals based on time now that the car has been put into weekend fun toy/occasional driving during the week.

I still say the warranty period has little to do with the decision to keep or jettison a car. If you do not like the car for whatever reason(s), get rid of it. If you like a car for whatever reason(s), then keep it.

I am baffled when people say they cannot afford to maintain a BMW, then go lease or buy a new car of any brand with monthly payments that far exceed the cost of maintenance.

Mystified... Mack

July 2008 so I guess were looking at 11½ years. Good weather car only-stored every winter. Only 63K miles. I've had it for 8½ years. I expect to keep it at least another 8-10 years. Only "repair" I've had in 11½ years has been the valve cover gasket. It's still on its original battery. Thanks Deltran.

24K in 6 years, 2 of those years the car was and still is mine (got her at 16,500 miles).. I actually got it out of warranty because in my eyes BMW doesn't make em like they used to.. they're too gadgety, big and full of M badges now.. the 1 may be the secretary's BMW for the masses but for the enthusiasts it's the just right!

I plan to keep my car till the engine kaputs and is my project car for years to come

Wow!! Original battery. I thought 7 years on mine was good. Do you use a battery tender/conditioner?

If their only plan is to go to the dealership for service then I would say yes its too expensive. People who think they have to go to the dealership either have tons of money or not enough creative/critical thinking to do the research on your own. Forums are the greatest invention for car enthusiasts since the car itself. You guys have helped me keep this thing running!

I also imagine people not budgeting for unexpected things and don't do any proactive maintenance planning get caught in German car maintenance hell as well.

To avoid being caught in this hell of which you speak, I generally adhere to Mike Miller's Lifetime BMW Maintenance Schedule, performing as much of the work as I am able in my own garage. Some is done by a local independent shop. Some is done by my brother in his somewhat distant professional shop. At this point, my local dealer is only performing recalls.

Peace... Mack

Just passed the 10 yr. mark. About done with upgrades that have just made a great car even better. A summer only car, I expect to keep this car till the fat lady sings.
