The City just blocked my garage. What Can I do?
So the City of Chicago just started tearing up the sidewalk/street in front of my garage.
I went and talked to the workers, and they said it would be like this for 5 days or more! No warning, no nothing. Just no parking sign on the street. So my car's parked 2 block's away, and I'm not sure what I can do. There's no parking garages close to here, and I don't want to leave my baby on the street. Un-acceptable situation. I understand there has to be "progress", and it's that time of year for road construction, but how about a little warning. Can the City just take away my garage like that with no warning? I guess I'll go talk to my alderman, I'm sure that will help . Note the typical situation in the pic. 2 guys standing, 1 working.

That sucks...maybe you could stash the car somewhere safe and get a rental for the next few days...it'll help you sleep better at night

Usually no matter how bad the construction (here at least) they still make sure private driveways and garages are accessible... at least at the end of the day when they're gone.
I would complain to the city. Last edited by findtom; 04-20-2006 at 10:23 AM.. |

man, that sucks. i'd be pretty pissed if i wasn't warned. what if you're car was in the garage, and you needed to get some place? that's pretty wack.

The real problem is, who to be mad AT. It's not the workers fault.

That sucks, but from your title I thought the city actually took the land that your garage was on -- which they can do. So, it's actually not that bad!
Seriously, the best thing to do is probably take a long weekend road trip. Hopefully by the time you get back they'll be done. Hope it all works out.

When they tore up the street in front of our driveway for storm drain repairs, they put down a heavy steel plate that allowed us to get in and out.

If you own and were not informed of the construction you have a legitimate complaint with the city (provided they were not 'emergency' repairs). If you rent - your landlord may have been notified. |

Find out who they work for and work up from there. If they're doing work for the city it seems like they should have notified you before they started work.

That is why I moved out of Chicago 5 years ago. Tony Sopra... er, ah Rich Daley, has fostered this mentallity that everyone living in Da City is just lucky to live there, and has to put up with whatever is done to them. I am a TV cameraman and I am drive around the city every day. Chicago is more beautifull and tourist friendly than it has ever been. The trade off is the residents have to deal with inconviences. I would recomend calling your alderman and then try the papers (Sun Times, Trib), and the TV stations 2,5,7,and 9. Good luck I hope it works out, at least your car is not trapped in!

I am not saying we should kill the stupid people, we should just remove the warning labels off of everything and let nature take it's course. |

I would recommend calling the police to find out if they have permits for the construction. My sister in Philadelphia had some construction workers doing work across the street from her building in the middle of the night. She called the police and it turned out they were from private construction company and didn't have permits. They recieved a huge fine and were forced to stop work immediately. Hey, it's worth a try.

those pictures are classic! I love em'. Suck to hear that man, and by the time you go the the papers, etc. the work will be done and they will say ....what can we do now, what do you want, the job is done. Good luck trying to fight the city, and keep that touring looking awsome.

If they worked for the city they would have left notice. Since they didnt, chances are they arent legit. Call the cops and find out, doesnt cost you anything...

* Update
I talked to the foreman ( guy in the pickup truck) very nicely about my situation, and he said they would fill in the hole with gravel at the end of the day, just as some members had said. No notice was given to any homeowners on the block about this. It's still pretty annoying but my car is out, and it should have a home tonight. BTW, you guys better watch what you say about da Mayor, he don't take too kindly to that kind of talk.

Thanks, me too.
In theory. I'm off to work, gotta light up some toilets at the Kitchen and Bath expo. Hopefully I can get in my garage when I return home. Thanks for the support guys.
