ED Delivery Question

There is one little detail that no one seems to be discussing. When you drop off your car in Europe and you have a wait time of 6-8 weeks, what do you drive back home in the meantime? Does everyone have a second car to drive or do you use a rental or what? By then I'm assuming you would have either traded or sold your old car to use on the downpayment. Any insight?

To do an ED you need to either hang on to your current vehicle or have a 2nd car. There's no other way around it. You have to pay for the new BMW first before you can pick it up, so if you need your current car as a trade in, then you have to find some other mode of transportation. Generally, you will have to make 1 payment (assuming you're financing the new car through BMW) while it's still in Europe or in transit. It was simple for me since my current car has virtually no value as a trade in. In fact, I'm trying to drive it very, very gently so it lasts another 1000 miles or so until my ED gets back here.

I did not trade mine in, I waited and sold it private party. I ended up selling it a week before mine arrived and I drove a rental. I almost sold it months before (even before I picked it up in Munich) because it was an SUV and I was concerned that the way the market was heading I wouldn't be able to get what I wanted out of it. If I would have I would have driven a rental.

So you didn't use the sale of your "old" car as part of your downpayment for the 135? Two months of a rental shoots alot of value out of a trade-in. Trade-in or private party doesn't make any difference since I had planned on using that money toward the 1. I, however, don't see renting a car for 2 months and my wife has the only other car. Just wondering what other people are doing or if dealers are allowing the use of trade-in car for the 2 months on the contract that its in same/similar condition plus some appropriate amount of miles on the car. Dunno.

I saved up the downpayment on my own and waited until the 135i arrived here before listing my old car for sale. I think you'll find that's pretty much how everyone handles it.

For me it was a no-brainer since I'm not a fan of trade-ins anyways. I'd much rather detail the car myself and get top dollar by selling it private party.

I bought a 96 beater Civic, sold my 2005 Civic for $11,500 to help with the down payment, and suffered in the beater for 4 months waiting for my 1er to get back to the States. The worst part was driving the 135 on the bahn, then coming back home to that Civic. oh gawd it was bad!
