Why does the light switch do this?

The knob pops in and out. Is there any reason for this to do this? Or is this just some loose end that wasn't deemed worthy of tying up?

For some reason I thought at first that it was more of a comfort feature. Leave it on Auto and push it in. The button goes in flush with the dash and won't get in the way of....I dunno....your knee?

On VW and Audi light switches you push in and then twist and it unlocks the switch so you can remove it and replace it in the event it goes bad. I imagine it is for the same purpose on the BMW.

Lets try the push in to prevent one's knee accidentally switching the lights on or off depending on what you want or dont want as you enter or exit the car.

Is that a good explanation?

I realized this a while ago but I don't think it makes a difference. Never really bother to thinkn about it. Probably figures if you have it set at auto, you just want to push it in and out of the way so your knees dont knudge it or anything.

When I push mine in like that, the car folds up into a briefcase so I can take it into the office with me. You have to get out real quick after pushing the button though or you get folded with it.

Actually when I push mine in, a small spray of "new car smell" comes out of the dash. This allows me to continue to "sniff my interior" and feel at ease again...

I'm surprised that some people's knees get that far. You must be tall buggers.

actually, if you're on a crapy date, and you want to ditch your date, push the button and the door open and your date is dicarded on the side of the road. It only works if someone is sitting there.
