After 3000 miles, I've settled into about 15.5 mpg city (real city, aggressive driving), and 29mpg highway (85 mph highway)

I definitely think its easier to keep good MPG with a manual. I find that I get better MPG on the highways by crusing in 5th rather than 6th

ok guys. its 4am here(came back home from friend's), and i used up
my very first tank of gas in my E90. I almost 'bottomed-it' out, miles to gas station shows 25 or less, needle is almost at the very bottom. It took 285miles and average MPG shows 18.9mpg. I would say, 70% city driving and 30% highway. Overall, I won't complain but I am not satisfied. Hopefully after break-in(currently have 285miles ) it gets better. I always use DS mode though, use engine braking to put less pressure on the brakes(I know engines can last long, but bad brake pad break-in will cause more painful trouble later), and occasional 70~80% throttle in 2nd/3rd gear(Never went over 4k) since I wanted to feel that low-end range of the powerband(silky smooth and torquey. I love it!).

When I first got my car I averaged 21MPG (80% highway, 20% city). Now that I have 3,500 miles behind me my average has bumped up to 24.7. I was hoping it will ulitmaltely settle in a little over 25mpg. I tend do drive semi aggressively and at highway speeds of 80 - 90 mph.

hmm. I also wonder.. They wouldn't put anything below 91octane hopefully.
but you never know those sneaky dealerships, especially with current gas prices.

why don't we compare MPG including our average MPH rather than highway/city. I reset both for every tank of gas for comparision. I do a lot of local driving with stop and go so with an average speed of about 30mph I get about 23mpg. This has been pretty consistant for a few tanks now. I also have a manual transmission.

I found something "different" this weekend. The MPG on the main display (no iDrive for me) changes depending on which FOB you use!!!!! I reset the MPG when I filled up on Friday. IT went right up to 25.7 cruising the City streets back to home. Then my wife got in on Saturday, called me, and it was down to 19 something. So we stopped the car and I put my FOB in and it went back to 25. So it appears that the FOB controls the MPG rating as well. Resetting on one FOB does not reset for the whole car.

P.S. To reset the MPG (or average speed) press and hold the button on the end of the top stalk, and whichever item is displayed will reset.
To reset trip, you go old-school and press the button below the odometer. |

I have run 2 tanks of the midgrade through, and have averaged 21.1mpg with my mostly city commute.
Now that gas is under $3 per gallon, I treated it to a tank of premium. It takes me about 2 weeks to burn through a tank with my 8 mile commute. So, It will be a while to see if I notice a change in MPG. I do not feel a change in performance, but I tend not to beat on the car in town. |

Also, I know you're new so I'll give you a tip. Don't listen to fredtoo, he thinks adobe photoshop counts as a mod. It's a BMW so it costs more for insurance and gas than some other cars but we all knew that going in.

BMW ADVERTISES that the car makes so much hosepower.
I can only make that HP on Premium fuel. If it advertised that it can run on the lower grade fuel, it would have to advertise that it has less HP. The car's ecu adjusts timing based on the fuel used, based on the feedback from sensors, such as the knock sensor. If you do not need all the available HP, then you can run on a lower octane of fuel. Last I checked, city driving does not tax your engine to the limits. |
