My first BMW was a big-motor E28. I loved that car, it was perfect. Rust got it (I'm from Wisconsin originally).

What the hell happened to BMW... is it just fleet mileage and %recyclable? There's a guy in Sarasota selling a 2001 3.0l Z3 Coupe and I am so tempted...

It's always the damn electric steering.

Everyone I talk to, everything I read, everything I've experienced. I just cannot get over the Electric assist steering. I've driven nearly every non ///M in the last few model years and everyone feels the same.

I honestly can't see myself moving past "E" chassis bimmers. (Well maybe the M2)

I dunno how they f-cked it up so badly.

I would have bought a new M240i if the steering hadn't felt like a 90's Sega Daytona arcade machine.

Go test drive a Toyota GT86/Scion FRS/Subaru BRZ. Great steering feel and electric!

Right? I was so disappointed after testing one. Even my Golf has better steering feel!

I really hope BMW listen up to the criticisms here and invest more in connecting the wheel back to the road.

Not to mention the drive towards higher efficiency, both in terms of saving 1mpg by the engine not driving a hydraulic pump, but also during the build and servicing of the car.

So is the steering in the M240i the same as the steering in the M235i?

I couldn't feel any difference in the steering between any of the M lite cars.

Did NOT like the way the M235i electric steering felt. Hopefully they'll 'ketchup' soon.

I had an X3 35i and that was actually fun for what it was.

No, it's ok. I was considering the M235i alongside the 435i M Sport. I really did like the car, but I felt it really wasn't any better than what I already owned (my, then, 2012 135i M Sport with PPK1). When I walked away, I didn't have that "Gotta have it NOW" feeling. When I saw the Z4, and the ridiculously low lease payment on it, I just pivoted and decided to try something completely new to me. But that's me. If you're set on a 1er replacement, I really like the M240i for that purpose.

Not really set on replacing my 1er. I'm completely happy with it and would only replace it if it was totaled, or in a bad accident that would affect it's driveability. Don't know that I would replace it with an M240i but that is something that I would seriously consider. Haven't driven the M240i yet but I hear it's electric steering is pretty much the same as the M235i, which I didn't love. Never considered the Z4 or a 2 seater at all because I always wanted the extra back seats, but I hope you're enjoying yours.

No new BMWs on my horizon. After I bought my 128i CPO I received a questionnaire from BMW about my buying experience. I've only owned two BMWs: my CPO 128i and E46 purchased new. It asked something like my future buying decisions and I wrote that I won't be buying another new or late model BMW. My next car would be a much older BMW or I would be leaving the brand for something else (they hate to hear that).

Just do what I did; buy three 1-Series cars, and that way you can wreck 2 of them and still have one left over :-)

lol steering "feel" discussion again. It's overblown and most people cannot tell any difference at all between EPS and HPS. First and foremost, it's subjective; one can notice something the other cannot. And secondly, how steering works depends on many factors. I bet my ass that most of the people who hate EPS slap wheel spacers for dat stance and further detoriate the steering without noticing any difference at all.

For me, the most noticeable issue is the acceleration factor. The e-steering systems are too fast to notice any "processing" and the weight is adjustable. But my complaint is that if I hold the wheel at a fixed degree, the amount of actual wheel angle will vary depending on speed. Not my fave, and unpredictable compared to hydraulic.
