Current question for me is whether to join the business and expand or to get my own thing up and running. Because of this predicament I'm procrastinating like no tomorrow (as both options look good)

if you can be a share holder in the family business go that way as its established, has cash flow, and you can then build on that. Establishing and maintaining cash flow is the hardest thing to do and the most important, if thats already there take it.

I'm moving things gradually to china and taiwan because the australian govt, especially the nsw govt, has workers comp laws which defy logic. eg: the employer, no matter what the employee did to hurt himself, is always in the wrong.

seriously if your family business can be moved, try moving it to china or taiwan. whenever i go there the business owners over there laugh at me and tell me they have moaning sorry looking australian business owners in there offices all the time saying they cannot stand being screwed by theyre fellow aussies any more. Thats when it sinks in how bad the situation is here. people actually travel from others countries with injuries then fake an accident here and get an insurance payout for 5 - 10 years or so, australia is famous for it.

however, having control over your future is worth it.

As for 1M I've decided to wait a little bit till i know if numbers will definately be limited.

NOT to hijack this thread...BUT..

I had a shift manager come to work wearing thongs with all good intentions to change her shoes in the staff room before starting her shift.

We have signs on all entry points from the reception area into the Gym which state " NO THONGS/SANDLES "..

She was running late for her shift so entered the main Gym area to turn on equipment wearing her thongs and slipped and twisted her ankle.

GUESS who gets it from behind from GIO workers Comp..

GIO are the worst, i switched from them to Employers Mutual who are slightly better.

i approached a law firm about the workers comp laws in NSW and he said, no kidding, employers are screwed, there is nothing you can do you have no rights.

he explained to me how its the only legal self insuring system he knows of in the world where the insurance company can legally lift the rates the very next year to cover the costs of the previous year. Its insurance with no risk and its legal. The selected few insurance compainies can basically print money.

i employed an argentinian factory worker, he had been in Australia 3 months, he fakes an injury and goes home. Fellow workers testify that he faked the injury and he said to them when leaving i'm never working again with a grin. An independent doctor proves the injury is 3 years + old!!! guess what i am still guilty cos he aggravated it here and i should of known about it. i don't have esp and he had an easy job which required many hours sitting on his arse. case has finally fallen off the books now after 3 years but has cost me 180k+ over that time.

Other south americans i employ told me he came to australia just to pull the injury and get a payout. Its well known overseas that you can do this here.

this country is at a tipping point with manufacturing, its sad because we will all be poor if we have to work for massive importers like Bunnings or Coles.

My dealer said they wont know exact Australian deliveries, until their meeting with BMW Australia in Melbourne on December 6. when they are given their individual allocations...

As far as deposits go, I think it will depend on the individual dealers.

When I went to confirm my order last Saturday, my dealer who I have had a close relationship with for over 20 years didnt even process my credit card deposit..

Key reason I jumped was that it is "limited" build numbers. This, if it is true, should protect retained value somewhat and also mean you have a rare car, without spending mega dollars on a GT2 RS or similar.

Out of the box performance is another plus AND I suspect it will be quicker, everywhere, than an M3, BMW just won't say as much, can't either. I stand to be corrected, we shall see

Put two deposits down, dealers won't nail you with a big (~$4k deposit) till it is firmly priced/specced etc.... even then IF it is only 100 cars then they will FLY out the door at RRP plus huge dealer delivery charges IMO.

Group buy might be awesome. But the only issue is if the numbers are actually limited to a hundred - I doubt any one dealer will be able to secure more than 2 cars. Also doubt they'd be willing to let them for a big discount. The best way might be to approach BMW Australia directly.

Sparoz, did you ever get a response from them on our preview request?

Interesting

Any particular reason for doing this? $120kish car + $180kish car, both 2 door, 4 seat coupes of similar performance (apart from the obvious 3 has high power up top, 1 has power down low).

If you have that kind of money, ever thought of just getting a $300k car and a cheap get-around car? Love to hear your thoughts.

I know what you're saying, both cars will share the same genes and driving a 300k car would be pretty sweet. IMO the 1M will be the perfect daily driver, plenty of low end torque which makes driving around town a blast. The M3 will be the perfect weekend car and ideal for the track.
