The price of being OCD
I'm sure most of you have noticed that I've been trying to chase down a steering wheel over the last few days as I damaged the leather on my current one.
I'm the only one who'd ever know it was there as you can't see the damage - it's on the outside of the ring at the bottom of the wheel - but every time I turn the wheel my hands pass over it and it's driving me nuts... My completely over-the-top OCD solution: I bought an M3 DCT wheel. Got one brand new for $425 with free shipping... |

I've got the old school automatic flappy paddles. If I got the DCT wheel, is it pretty much a straight swap or will I need a different wiring harness to make the paddles work?

Just need a harness switch. If you PM Stu (bmroxm5), he's done a few wheel changes and can guide you through.

They only had the one but they have plenty of other BMW Steering Wheel stuff so they might be able to get more of them... http://stores.ebay.com.au/NEXON-MOTO...=p4634.c0.m322 They do have other E9X M3 wheels listed but they all include either the trim, the paddles, the buttons, or the airbag and are substantially more $$$ I only needed the base wheel as I can re-use everything else from my current one. |

Am still deciding which trim panel to get. I will probably just reuse the current one but the M3 one does look a bit more agressive... Also thinking about this: But if I do that then I'll HAVE to buy the CF Interior kit and that's $$$$$$... Mirrors have hit a dead end for the moment... No one in the UK seems interested in helping us out and Ev can't get any of the RHD parts. (the electrics/housing are side specific as well) NOT gonna cave and pay $3000 to get them locally! NOT!!! |

Alcantara non electronic version. Easy to fit, just a moment of nerves when removing the airbag. If you fit one yourself MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY and discharge any residual voltage by turning on the headlights or something.
I blacked out the bright blue centering strip at the top of the wheel with a sharpie as I can do without the distraction. |

Nice.. I really like the flat bottom but I'm not really a fan of the Alcantara... Would probably feel differently if I was putting it in a 1M though...

A trick I learned in the army (Cut Lunch Commandos) back in black boots days, was to "bone" out small tears in the leather with the back of a spoon until the torn leather stretched out to fit the raw part. I have since applied the technique over many years to my wife's leather shoes, particularly when she skins a heel. After stretching the torn bit back, you put a drop of contact cement on a toothpick, and put it between the surfaces. "Bone" again to get everything flush, and let it set overnight. You can then apply a small bit of leather dressing. I admit to being an OCD'er too, but this fix costs a fraction of a cent.
