e82 automatic transmission replacement?

Hello addicts,
I have a 128i auto that had a shudder on lockup of torque converter. Bmw replaced the torque converter but the car still has shudder. the warranty will only cover 4700 towards a new replacement transmission (which is about $9500 total). That means I have to come out of pocket almost 5k. I can get an independent shop to replace with a used transmission for a couple grand (and warranty will pay), but I was told I have a 50/50 chance that I can get the computer to work with it. Is this true?:Im an e36/e39 guy and know workarounds to those vehicles, but. the e82 is considerably more modern

10k for a trans is so crazy. Not much help here, but I'd call Rob at Speed Logic here in California to get some info.

Since you’re in Florida I’d avoid calling Rob. I’m sure there are good Indy shops near you. Yelp and Google are actually really good help. Rob also is not very helpful with 128i or anything that’s not N54 N55 or a bro that’s going to share his work on Instagram (ask me how I know). He’s a nice guy for sure but I was less than thrilled with the work. If you really want to talk to someone helpful that’s all the way out in California, I’d call Kenny at Auto WerkStatt in Manhattan Beach.

Sorry to not be more helpful. Just wanted to respond to someone suggesting SpeedLogic.

Regarding getting the computers to work with the new transmission, I'd be surprised if it was not possible. People replace modules, engines and transmissions and there have even been some that have gone from MT<> AT.

I'm not a "bro" and don't share his work to IG, and I've never had any issues with Rob and his work has always been top notch. I don't have a 128, so that may be correct. Personally, I've never dealt with a more honest mechanic in my life.

Any chance you could describe the symptoms you had?

Perhaps I should roll back the IG comment as that's likely not fair. More of a gut reaction from me when I had my car out there to look at a very simple issue with the brakes and it sat for days with no communication while I watched car after car run through the shop on his Instagram story.

I get the feeling he may be a victim of his own success. Like I said he's a super nice guy but I started to get the feeling their shop is a little overwhelmed and certain cars and customers may fall from their cross check.

My intake and control arm install were great with him. But my suspension (esp subframe bushing), performance brakes, and exhaust install all had issues. The exhaust had a rattle that he did, to his credit, fix under his own guarantee. The suspension though, one of the subframe bushings was not installed correctly and he gave me a car with a bad alignment and didn't say anything. My local shop I take the car to for regular maintenance noticed it when I said I thought the car felt a little weird in the canyons (lesson learned, never leave without getting the alignment print out). Final straw was the brakes. During canyon runs the car would start making a sound as if something was rubbing. Made an appointment and everything, and the car sat for over a week with no updates and very little response to inquiry. I ended up getting the car back and took it to my local shop and they had it diagnosed and fixed in two hours (issue with the parking brake settings).

I drove all the way from the South Bay based on recommendations of his shop, but I won't anymore.

Sorry OP for the long hijack.

thats an insane quote. A used trans will work as long as its the same model year, just need a competent coder to Vin-match it for you (literally a 30 minute process).

Id call a few more shops for quotes and info, I'd be weary of a mechanic that gave me 50/50 odd of the trans working.

50/50 shot of it working?

How about a 0% chance of using that incompetent shop?

There's a million BMW specialists around Orlando. Call them and see who's not afraid of computers in 2020.
