what confuses me is that when i keep my RPM lower and keep the meter pointing towards higer MPG the counter goes down. im kinda confused whether i would follow the MPG meter or the countdown thingy to decide on the most efficient way of driving the car.

i get 22+MPG with combined freeway and city driving.
At speeds above 60 mph I get better mileage on the gallon by keeping my RPM above 2500 RPM with 5th gear and then to 6th when it approaches 3000 RPM- dropping the RPM back to 2500 improves the MPG

When I am cruising at low speeds below 50 mph, shifting to the 5th or 6th gear also presents excellent mpg- the trick is to avoid accelerating rapidly.
I typically get 25mpg combined driving in the Houston area- and that is approximately 420 miles between fill-ups.
The longest trip I have done with it is a 90 mile trip and I got over 33mpg on.

I have the heaviest e90 model and I consistently get about 22.8 mpg doing about 3/4 freeway and 1/4 city driving. It goes down quickly though when the ratio changes.

I'll be making my 1st major road-trip this weekend (about 1100 miles) and will definitely report back with my mpg during the trip. I typically set the cruise at 80-82 mph. I got about 28 mph on one 400 mile trip, but this one will definitely give a better barometer on fuel efficiency.

What kind of mpg will I get when I start getting on it?
You will not get much better stopping and going. Almost 5k and still getting around 21mpg. Damn price to live in paradise.

Do this and you'll be amazed at how much your mileage will improve.
I'm not complainting, but to let him know it could be worse. I drive aggressively but does anyone (other than you) really shift before 2krpm?

Just what do you expect to get when you drive a car with 3 liter displacement and pushing 3500lb wet in the first 4 gears? I'm sure that 18 mpg is in line with G35, TL, IS, C class, anything else you want to compare to. The only way to get better than that in the city is to drive a 4 cylinder compact or a hybrid.

Our current average is 26.4 mpg, 60% highway.

I redline it apprx at least 10-15x a day but at the same time my commute is entirely highway, so i still manage around 20-21 mpg. It's been getting better though, around the first 1,000 miles i could only get 16-17mpg.
