Like a few others on this thread, I'm all over the shop. Right now, I need 4 seats and don't have the cash to get a car which is more expensive to run than a 135i, so if I wrote my car off today and had to replace it with the insurance payout, I'd step down to someone's pre-modified WRX or a modified Ford Falcon XR6 turbo and keep the change.

If I come into a serious chunk of change, really the only 4-seater I'd be excited to swap into would be a 911 Carrera.

If I didn't need 4 seats I'd step straight into a Miata or Lotus Elise (depending on cashflow).

When my son turns 18 (still a few years to go yet), he'll be getting a NA Series Miata for his birthday, so in all likelihood, that'll be my next car.

If I had to replace the 1er, would probably be a Cayman. Luckily, I don't have to replace the 1er.

If the M2 is similar to the M3/M4 in driving dynamics but in a smaller package, the M2 would be the car I would move to if I wanted to buy another BMW. I got the chance to push the M3/M4 competition package cars in the M Car Control Clinic. Granted the courses were not at full on track speeds, it was enough for me to get a good feel for what the cars could do; especially since I drove the cars on a wet course with periods of rain. I was amazed how fast and hard I could push the M cars in these conditions.

I got to briefly drive my buddy's '16 Mustang GT. Overall, the car seemed decent. Didn't get to really push it since we were driving around downtown Austin.

Both the M3/M4 and the Mustang GT cars are just too big for me. I like a small agile car. So if it's not an M2, I'd consider a RS3 or picking up a used Focus RS.

I'd like a Cayman too but only as a weekend toy. The car isn't utilitarian enough for me. Heck, the 1 is barely enough for me to use as a daily driver at the moment. I'm considering actually buying a daily driver with more flexibility to be used in that capacity.

Yeah love the idea of a Porsche (Cayman/911) but it couldn't be my "only" daily driver. Usable back seats and a long trunk/foldable seats are minimum requirements.

Intersting that only a few would move to the 2 series. Anyone care to offer reasons?

Differences:
>more power (roughly 10% across the board)
>electric steering
>better auto transmission
> extra 2 inches of cabin space
>slightly more reliable engines
>slightly less weight?
>more tech
>more computer run

For me? I have to consider kids when I get my next car.

Can anyone provide insight on car seats and kids with the 1 series back seat. I can tell you when I was a lad I didn't mind climbing into the back of M3s at all. So my question really is, is strapping a baby on up into a car seat a real bitch? Or is it not so bad compared to modern 3 or 5 series?

My thinking is this: if it's just annoying enough, I can ensure that the kid is always riding in the wife's car instead of messing mine up but I could make do if necessary.

I'm considering an M235i (and converting it to a livable M235i race), Z4 M paired with an i3 for commuting, or just maintaining my 135i for another few years and getting an i8.

I would consider one but...

1) Electric steering
2) iDrive
3) Active Driving Assistant
4) Heavier (than the 128i)
5) Turbo vs NA
6) Not nearly as distinctive looking to me

The 128i is by no means a purist's car. It's filled with hundreds of electronic sensors and gizmos that add ridiculous complexity and weight, but by BMW standards, it's the last of its kind.

Out of interest, why does everyone say the Cayman (a 2 seater), not the Boxter (same price range as a 1er) or a Carrera (a 4 seater).

EDIT: Okay, so it seems the Cayman is the same price as a Boxter in the USA so it's the classic coupe vs convertible thing ... even when a soft-top performs every bit as good. (In Australia the Boxter's cheaper)

But the field of 2 prestigious sports cars is pretty vast - If you only needed 2 seats, what made you choose a 1er?

If my 1M was gone I would do anything to find another 1M. If hypothetically that's not allowed or possible and I had to buy something within 24 hours I'd probably get an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Audi RS3. I love me a 5 cylinder turbo. Best all around car I ever owned was an Audi 200 wagon in tornado red.

I'd buy either the M240i or the M2 Competition. That's assuming I'd buy another new car. Frankly, if the One bites the dust, I'll happily drive my 2010 SLK until it bites the dust.

I'm actually in the process for finding a replacement for my 135i. I need something with 4 doors, AWD and fun to drive. Golf R is too much, so that leaves me with the WRX. I went and drove one last night, and surprisingly it drives very well. Feels tight, engine is responsive, its decently quick....and then there's the gearbox....throws are about a mile long and it most definitely doesn't like to be hurried, although that may have something to do with the rev hang. So I don't really know what to do...

Was really close to buying an E92 M3 a year or so ago, got down to signing the paperwork and had such a miserable dealer experience throughout that I walked away from it. I didn't like the steering feel as much, but no denying the performance of the car. Also that V8 at high rpm...

Cayman S would be another possibility.

Not many other cars interest me; the current BMWs feel too disconnected/videogame-y. The 128i strikes the perfect balance for me in terms of fun, useability and (relatively) cheap maintenance, particularly on expendable items for the track.

I was going to replace my 135 convertible this winter with a new 240 convertible.

But my 135 still runs great (I am the original owner) so I think I will keep it another year.

There isn't any other convertible out there in the general price range that's better I don't think. Porsche 718 is $80k+ with any decent options.

Mustangs are way to big.

I sat in one, and hated its layout. Also, reading about all the popped head gaskets and having to deal with Ford dealers who think that they are selling God's chariot (and don't allow test drives), yeah, no go.

It really shows how a NA high revving engine can be achieved to.

I could not find any information in Germany regarding the GT350, however i heard that it has an issue with an oil pump, unsure if it is true or just a one off thing. Shame that all the glorious affordable engines have issues.
