Ordered new turbos. Preventative measures against WG rattle?

The turbos on my car are blown so I just bought a replacement pair of turbos. They are used but they only have 25,000 km on them (15,500 miles) so they are almost like new.

They will be getting installed in the next couple of weeks. While they are out of the car though, is there anything I can do to safeguard against future waste gate rattle issues?

Only thing that would prevent wastegate rattle is to never use them

Yes. Return the new turbos you ordered and get good non OE turbo(s) along with supporting hardware and a tune. As a bonus you can make more power. Not every turbo setup has the N54's ridiculous wastegate problem.

Any N54 turbo with an internal wastegate, see: ALL twins available on market, will rattle eventually. The only way, I repeat, only way to be cured of it is to go to an externally gated single.

Enjoy your build!

Sorry about the turbos blowing. Can I ask what the mileage on your car was when they died?

From my research, there isn't a single company that produces reliable aftermarket twins for the N54. There's no shortage of people with Pure or RB turbos that have had smoking issues after just a few thousand miles. If I'm going to spend the money to upgrade the twins, I'm going to do it when there is a company with proven reliability.

Maybe one day but I sure as shit don't have the budget for it right now. Being in a RHD market means manifolds and pretty much everything else needs to be custom fabricated. There are no kits. The cost of doing a decent single turbo conversion in Australia will very easily cost at least the value of the car.

163,000 kms (100,000 miles). For the first couple years of its life the car only had the oil changed in line with BMW's service interval but for the last 7 years or so it has had it changed every 7000 - 10,000 km.
