Compression test?
I'm going to replace spark plugs on my N52 and figure I'll do a compression test while I'm at it. I've done plenty on other cars but this will be my first with Valvetronic and a computer controlled push-start ignition. I checked the Bentley manual, but it has nothing.
Does the throttle automatically open? Do I even need to hold the accelerator down? Will it crank too long because the car isn't starting? Any other gotchas compared to older cars? And what is the pressure spec? Last edited by foilman; 07-10-2021 at 11:00 AM.. |

That video doesn't answer any my questions specific to the newer engines. His title says it includes the e90 and e92, but he's just guessing as he goes along, confused about BMW's having low compression engines, how many times to crank, etc. It's pretty low effort and I skmmed it last night before posting.

So to answer some of my own questions.
I guessed I wouldn't have to hold the throttle down. I don't know if it took a lot of pumps because the pressure was so high or it didn't open on its own. It will keep cranking for at least 10 revolutions, which stops when you hit the button a 2nd time. Pay careful attention to the fuse locations because there are so many related to the fuel system (like 8+ listed), but only half the spots used, so putting them back can be confusing (I first drove off with a non-functional water pump). No idea what the spec should be but I'm sure 220+ is fine. Last edited by foilman; 07-12-2021 at 08:03 PM.. |
