I've not had any problems with my cup holders. Several people keep commenting that they are so bad, but exactly what does that mean? Explanation??

I do sometimes drink Starbucks/DunkinDonuts coffee when I am driving and it hasn't spilled once. I prefer it better than the E46 cupholder and most cars I have been in.

I don't mind the position anymore. I actually got used to it, and its quite comfortable(trust me, I used to complain ALOT about this).

I still hate the fact that cup holder isn't "Deep" enough, and wide enough.
Just make it slightly wider in diameter(by 0.5in?), and slightly deeper(1in?), and it be awesome.

Someone should spill some drinks, file a law suit and make BMW NA does a recall.

I understand your frustration but I'm sure you agree that a car manufacturer, or any other marketer for that matter, should not be held accountable for mis-use of their product. I am reminded of the outrageous case of the woman who spilled coffee in her lap and successfully sued McDonalds for her mistake.

Yeah, that's the ticket. If one wants cupholders it MUST mean they want a minivan!
You're so right.

And, maybe those who want an audio system should probably just get a minivan as well and be driven around by their mommy, cause when driving one must ONLY drive and do nothing else.
If any of you want to have a conversation while driving, well then you should probably pull over in a safe parking lot and then talk, cause doing anything else besides driving is NOT what a car is for.

Actually, not very successful as the reward was lowered substantially, and I believe got lowered even more than what is posted on that link.

Personally, I don't agree with that lady. Everyone needs to take responsibility for their actions, and that includes corporations as well. If they are negligent then they should be held accountable.
I don't agree that McDonalds was 100% at fault in that case.
There is the question of her being a passenger and her grandson was driving, even though they claim that car was fully stopped and thus didn't cause any of the spill. Hmmmm...?

But, once again we digress away from the question at hand.
Thank you to those who have given real answers on how the current cupholders function. It seems that they should be ok for the occaisional time when I might want a bottle of iced tea or some such, while not needing a minivan.

I would have liked cupholders that would handle a 12 oz bottle while cornering, but I can live with cans. To some extent, I suppose one needs to buy into the minimalist interior design. It's just interesting how there are silly options are available -things like active steering, automatic radar adjusted cruise control, an integrated ski bag, and backup sonar...(in case we need to mount depth charges on the trunk) but nowhere to put change or cups, and a glove compartment too small for the owner's manual pack.

Anyhow, I have found that if you drink at least 1/2 of your 12 oz right away, the center of gravity goes down enough that cornering won't spill anything on your passenger.

My understanding is that if McDonalds had covered some of the medical expenses for second degree burns (a few doc visits and maybe some silvadene) then the woman would have been mollified enough not to have proceeded with the suit. That being said, for cryin' out loud, it was hot coffee.

The mention of silvadene is not intended as generic medical advice, and not as a substitute for treatment from your licensed healthcare professional. Avoid silvadene if you are known to be reactive to silver or to sulfa containing compounds. Caffeine containing compounds are not for everyone. Those with heart conditions, irritable bowel, or insomnia are particularly advised to use caution with ingestion. Past results are not guarantees of future gains. Your mileage may vary. All models are over 18.

I came from a e46, and I love the new cupholders. I think they hold beverages well, and love how they can go away, making the flow of the center counsel work.

As I've said before, I'm not some fatty wanting to hold a half gallon of soda from the dash of my SportWagon

Well, if you put a can of drink "properly", and it just pops out because of the horrible cup holder design by BMW, I say BMW is somewhat responsible for it.

McDonalds lady.. ehhhhh. whatever. At least she got rich.

What pray tell was McDonalds guilty of with respect to selling hot coffee? Are you a personal injury attorney?

It was not merely hot but excessively and dangerously hot.

Based on the US liability / tort system, that means McDonalds is responsible for damages. Whether this system is correct or not is a completely different discussion, as one could argue that an individual is responsible for protecting himself from other's negligences. I'm not sure which I like better.

They had also been cited for the dangerously hot coffee previously, I believe.
