Lawyer screen in German
Just curious really, I just wanna know if this is only happening to me (surely not)...
Do other people sometimes get the iDrive's lawyer screen (the legalize you have to say 'Accept' do on startup) in German when you turn on the car? This has happened to me maybe 4 times in total since I got the car in mid-September. So far I can't think of any particular pattern to cause it. I must have started the car 100 times since I've gotten it so its obviously quite a rare event. Once I press 'Accept' everything else is in English from thereon in. On another language related note, I notice sometimes streets in my city are displayed in French, which on the screen at the same times others are in English. i.e. some will show as "Rue" while others show as "Street". -Tim |

did this happen when you used the 2nd key fob?
if so, then you have to select your language preference. if not, then it's one of those german electronic gremlins!

Avocat Screen
The E90 I have gives one the choice of English, French or Spanish for the navigation person's voice. I put my speaker on French, as I want to refamilarize with the language, and she has a lovely accent.

It happened to me just 2 days ago.. It flashed in German for just a sec and then back to English. It was my regular key and nothing was different except it was around 30 degrees outside... that damned snowflake!

I knew right away what you meant when I read the words "lawyer screen" in this thread's title. However, “disclaimer screen" would be more appropriate. I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, your English grammar teacher or your Mom. I'm just trying to help.

How can you get rid of it completely? Probably can't, I guess. Thank you, ambulance chasers. CM.

If it's happening intermittently on starup then my guess is you have a hardware fault - probably part of your i-Drive computer's memory. To elaborate my reasoning, if a part of memory is not working correctly (say for example the location where the language look-up-table is stored), software is probably referencing data from the incorrect memory location. This is often why you see programs just crash for no apparent reason (other than a software bug ofcourse).
Remember that software is deterministic - it does not fatigue. If the S/W was programmed to do something one way, it will always do it that same way every single time - unless something else interferes. Hardware on the other hand does fatigue, and can lead to random system behaviour. The only other thing that might be the cause is another piece of rogue software or race condition ... either way I'd get it checked out.

I have the same problem. I'd say I get the German warning message about once every 3 or 4 weeks. Mine doesn't change to English after a few seconds, but once I click accept, the rest of my iDrive menu is in English. I've never had it happen more than once in a 3 week period, but it's definitely a recurring issue with my E90. I e-mailed my dealer about it, and he said he knew of no "fix" for the problem yet.

With the amount of people that see the problem, I doubt it's a hardware problem. Not everyone is going to have a memory bit stuck that directs execution to the same place. It's probably a bug that displays the lawyer screen before checking what language to use, but it really could be any sort of software coding error. Just hope the same person didn't write the fly-by-wire or ABS code. CM
