Take a toyota corrolla with thin tires and the car has a high clearance. Now take your sport package bmw with the wider tires and it also has a lower clearance. A thin tire will cut through water (almost like butter). A wide ass tire will not be able to cut through water that good, it surface area is too wide so it takes longer to channel the water from the tire suface so you have a better chance of hydrop. Plus your car is also low so the water does not have alot of room to escape so more water is built up under the low car. For a toyota corrolla, the tire is slim so it take less effort to dispurse the water from the slim surface. The corrolla is also high so more room under the car for water to escape. Sorry for the long post and I am not a engineer or anything. Just thank about my logic. Becareful when it wet...
Partially correct: it isn't the car, it is the tires... but it isn't the width. Case in point: My Carrera 4s runs 225s in the front and 295s in the rear, and I could swear that the car has more traction in the rain than it does on dry ground. It's so amazing that I look forward to rainy days just to experience the thrill of driving it in such. The reason is that Pirelli formulated the tires to have excellent wet traction: if I was on different tires, I would likely slip around a lot more.

My suggestions:
1) Check your tire inflation, and make sure that it is at suggested settings. Overinflated tires will function almost as well as properly inflated ones in straight lines on dry pavement, but will hydroplane in rain or snow. Underinflated tires just cause problems wherever you go... save the desert.
2) Try different tires. If the inflation thing isn't the problem, it is the rubber compound that they are using on these runflats.

I've never liked runflats, and I'm not about to start now: If a fix-a-flat can and an air compressor is a reliable spare for a Carrera GT3, I'm happy using it on a BMW with roadside assistance! My first mod on getting my BMW will be replacing the tires with good old fashioned high performance rubber. I think they have several years of development left to go before they make a good RF

Drive safe, even if you look like a granny in the rain!

I have not had any hydroplaning issues at all so far and have driven at high speeds and took corners at reasonably high speed. Obviously, your driving style should change dramatically during rain. You cannot expect any car with any tire to do too well in rain, snow, or ice and should expect to slip a little.

Call me overly cautious, but I feel you should not even attempt to toss the car around in anything but dry weather.

I agree.
I've got the Bridgestone Potenzas on my 330i & the only time I have any problems with traction is when there's either a lot of rain or ice on the road & I'm pulling away from a complete stop. Even then, once the tyres catch grip they are fine.

Thanks

Just wondering since we get Bridgestone, Michelin, Continental and Pirelli on the E90's here

And is see the 130i with 18" are getting Goodyear runflats aswell, so E90 may have them soon

I think alot of it had to do with I-95's poor drainage of water. I was just driving in a straight line then all of a sudden no more contact with the road. It was raining it's ass off here in VA last night too. Oh yeah and no it wasn't driver error.

I think we all understand that. He has a 325i, the ZSP option does not have massive wide tires as those in 330i. That is why me and other poster asked what tire pressure he was running.

We also understand that some tires are better than others in the rain. But if he is hydroplaning so easily, something must not setting right.

the 325 and 330 sport both have 225 wide up front and 255 wide out back

both cars sport the same width tires

First off i have a 325i ZSP and if anything it has too much traction (in the rain) for my taste and i cant understand how people can complain. I am not reffering to Nikki but to whoever started this thread. But honestly Nikki my 325i has ZSP and has the RE050A with 255 in the back, correct me if im wrong, but isnt if the same size tire in the sport 330i? or is the rim in hte 330i wider? and obviously bigger in diameter.
Let the flaming begin...

Ok, mine has Michelins Pilot Sport 225f and 255r.

You know what? aquaplaning/hydroplaning occurs when driving forward(doh) FIRST on the FRONT TYRES.
And when/IF(in case of a bad tyre) they get rid of the waterfilm, the reartyres get rid of the rest which is a lot less(water) then what the front tyres had to deal with...In a bend just be a little more concentrated,

So I don't see the problem at all, traction is OK, grip fine(don't over rev it like this(me having fun)

http://www.gummen.org/tmp/Lelystad20...um/23Robin.WMV

In snowy conditions I need wintertyres. That's all.

Robin hood...I was doing exactly what you were doing, just yesterday when it was pouring.
there is this parking lot that has brand new asphalt. which is im guessing different that others, being that when i get off the car i can literally lose my footing. So basically drifts in 1st gear. i go in full circles holding the back out or around the shoppes. ill post up a video soon, it was just that last time i was too excited and my friend was too lazy.
You driving is impresive. i wish i had a little more low-end grunt like yours.

The 325i tires are not supposed to be the Potenza REO50As.
The difference first off is that the 325i sport package comes with 17" tires and the 330i sport package comes with 18" tires.

I have 325 ZSP-I have the Potenzas and the 17 vs 18 in is irrelevant, the tire width is the same as the 330 ZSP, which at issue in an aquaplanning exercise.

hm, then why is it that i have the Potenza REO50As even though i have a 325i w/ zsp . i have yet experienced any problems at all in rain, the car seems very solid even when i'm going at 100mph in the wet.

Well I didn't know they can just randomly decide which tires they're putting on cars. Those with the REO50A are getting such a better tire, it sucks to the people with the Pirellis.

just be sensible in the rain and you should be fine. no need to set land speed records in wet conditions...
