People love the 1M - They do not know what it is, but they like it

Anyone else have this....

I will be at a red-light and someone will aske me what kind of car is that? Or at a cars and coffee and get (the fenders wow) what is this little thing? It is the little car of mystery even for BMW fans - then the true car person will know it instantly and want to check it out.

Of all the cars I have owned more thumbs up and people sort of pondering what it is exactly....Not over the top, just enough - The stance with the flared fenders brings out general curiosity.

Had just this the other day. Was sitting in the car waiting for wife, and friendly aged man appears at my window and says "love your car! what is it? Is this how they came from the factory? Looks very special, must be a riot to drive etc etc.. he spotted it from a distance and saw that I was in it so had to find out more. Ended up having to go through all of the mechanical details of the car.

i do find myself saying, when people ask what i drive,"Have you ever heard of the 1M? I drive a 1M......" 9 times out of 10, they haven't, and then they proceed to google it to see what it looks like. I admit now I tend to say Golf GTI since that's become the daily.

Was driving around the city one night, and as the congestion started to move again, a car went past me and a young girl stuck her head out of the rear window and yelled, "I want your car! Don't know what it is but I want it!! Gimme your car!!!" hahah..

10 years on and it's still a mystery, and still highly desirable.

People are more apt to refer to my car as some kind of 3 series.
Most people don't know about the 1 series cars.

Well the one only existed in the states from 2008-2013, right? Lots of people started paying less attention around then, I think

My favorite line from people when I tell them it's a 1M is "oh an M3, I know those."

I was once asked at a gas station it if it was an M5. It's obviously a small car, but I think the proportions throw people off.
