Hello, and Some advice needed

Hi to all, my name Eiman most of my friends just call me E, Ive been in the car game for quite some time however mostly Audi's and VW's. Ive bought a 2009 128 Coupe, which I am completely in love with and glad that I found these forums.
Now the story,

I recently took my car to the dealership for regular service and what not, I asked to do the oil change and they said that its not due until June or 24k, as I insisted that they had only topped my oil of and never changed he still said it states in our system that thats the time. Picked up the car on Friday, they said everything is good to go, drove around over the weekend and on my way back from Riverside, the service engine soon light came on, so I pulled over turned the car of and when I started it again it cranked for a while before it started and the oil light illuminated, as I drove towards home I realized an extreme loss in power, came parked and Monday morning called the dealer and went in. At first they couldnt figure out exactly what was wrong, so yesterday they called left a message that they changed the vanos solenoid and will be pulling the cam's to check for irregular grooving?? Today I get a message stating that they put a barascope(SP?) down there and piston 3 in nicked?

So by the time I called them back my SA was gone so I will call in the morning, I feel if they would have changed the oil like I told them to none of this would have happened. Id like to know what you guys think on the subject as well.

Thanks in advance
cheers

hmm your logic sounds reasonable. I don't know much about how the actual engine works, but luckily you are in warranty !!!

edit: and welcome, if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

I'd keep track of what you asked them to do and they refused. Keep records of all that is said, dates are good too. If you have to make a claim to BMW NA then you have some record behind your claims.

I hardly think old oil would cause what you experience with that new of a car. If the oil was low, that's a different matter; but your post said they topped it off so maybe that isn't it. I think there is more to the story. Why are they having to top off the oil? is there a leak?

So what was the outcome? That was MAY 26...this is July4th, and some would like to know what happened. I also hardly think even "low" oil would nick the piston etc...wear on cam lobes, rings maybe but "nick" it?

Also, if a dealer tells you that you cannot or do not need an oil change, that is according to the BMW "maintenance free" schedule; but this does not preclude you getting a change at more proper intervals "at customer request". You pay for the extra change interval but it is far safer, and more economical in the end. I am old school maintenance no matter what BMW says, which is merely a marketing ploy. The motors can take 15K of course, but why do that when a 5-7K change is simply better for longer wear patterns. But let us know what took place....thanks.

Not changing oil often enough causes a little more wear in the engine, not an immediate issue like you describe.
