Does anyone know what these are?
I've seen these things also on the older 5 series and i was wondering if anyone knows what they're called and if someone has ever put them on a 1 series.
Thank you. Paul. |

They look like air inlets for a dual intake. Maybe the car is twin-turbo'd?

Looks like air ducts for cooling the brakes. Not easy making one for the 1er but it can be done as Berk race car had fabricated one

They are intake scoops of some sort. If you do find out who sells them please post. I think they would look very cool on the 135i grille.

They could be that too. But isn't that the purpose of the giant ducts on either side of them? I mean, those areas on the 135i are for exactly that, brake cooling. |

A lot of e39 guys, including myself love those mod on the 5 series especially if you got one with the m-tech package. (m-tech package is equivalent to the m-sport package for us 1ers).

There is a e46 on base here with those. He has them hooked up to his headlights. They are remote AE rings. I think they look tacky. To each his own.

So i found out that the classic name for these things is "air ducts". This guy on an M5 forum wrote:
"So I made such a nice grill for mine, I decided to make a few extra's.... Their 4" outside diam. stainless steel ducts in a factory new BMW M5 bumper grill....that I bought from the BMW dealership... $150 PLUS SHIPPING..." |

I'm confused - they're ducts, on an open grille, that don't really do anything? Isn't that a bit ricer?

You are correct. Typically they should have some sort of hosing attached to them that should go to the brakes. Then again people do a lot of things for looks and forget about the functionality that these parts or mods are intended for. My philosophy is if you are happy with it then that's all that matters.
