weird noise coming from speakers
hey,
I'm having a weird noise come from my speakers both when the car is on and off. It sounds like when you have computer speakers on but with no music playing... that bit of static... Anyone else have this issue? -Andrew

This happened to me tonight. It's happened 3x in the year and half that I've had my car. Turned the radio off, car off, restarted, you name it. The noise wouldn't go away. My girlfriend was looking at me like WTF? It was a little embarassing. Finally we went into a store and came out and the noise had stopped.
I did notice that the sound coming out of the speakers was greatly decreased when it was making the noise. I was thinking maybe it had something to do with the amp.

I too have had this once. I kid you not, I was superclose to crapping my pants. It was 6am and I was half asleep getting in my car for work, and then before I started, I get this SUPER FREAKING LOUD EXORCISM STATIC SCREECHING ATTACK ON MY EARS noise for about 2 seconds out of my 10 speaker system. Thanks BMW...

It happened to me today. The car must be spooked. It stayed with me the entire trip home (20 minutes). As soon as I pulled into garage it stopped!

The amp doesn't turn itself off when the car is off. You're picking up noise from the other wires running along the same path as the low-level wires from the front (radio) to the rear (amp) of the car.
Not awesome. |

I've only had my 2010 128i for 10 days, but have heard funny interference noises a few times. To me it sounds like GSM cellphone interference. Did any of you have your phone (AT&T or T-Mobile in the US, pretty much any network in Europe) with you at the time? GSM phones are notoriously RF-leaky (they will break into any badly-shielded audio system). It sucks that this happens even with the power off! Just another item to add to the list of things about the stereo that suck. Good job the rest of the car makes up for it, eh?

Had this happen to me a few weeks ago...I had just put my tennis bag in the trunk and opened the driver side door and then the "Eaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" noise started coming from the back speakers.
WTF!? It sounds sort of like a washing machine or something when you are loading in clothes and you have the lid open. It's like a loud buzz or feedback noise. After some fiddling around with the car, starting the engine, turning on the stereo, opening closing the doors...the noise persisted. I said screw it...so I started to drive to the courts and after about half a minute or so the noise stopped and never came back. Weird. |

This has been discussed before... static or weird noises from the speakers even with the car switched off and teh key removed. Continues for a few minutes then stops.
Past fix has been a SW update. (as much as I hate what all comes with BMW new lag SW) |

I wonder if it's caused by EMI coming from the electric water pump since it runs after the car is off?
I really like lots of things about the 135, but the electric "noise" in this car is quite disappointing. I've tried three different amplifiers (I have the ampless 2010 system) and all amplifiers have quite bad alternator whine along with random buzzes and noises when the amp is on, but the head unit is off. Lots of google searches shows it seems to happen with lots of BMW's, not just the 1 series. I'm in the middle of trying to install the least noisy amp where the logic7 amp normally is. That area is completely closed in by metal on all six sides. I'm hoping the further distance from the front (engine/alternator interference) and the back (battery, bluetooth module, fuel pump) will help reduce some of the noise.

Life sucks... read on about this issue here I have had it for quite some time. Its caused by the new update in our 1'ers that apparently causing an electronic relay between the amp and speakers to stay on for extended periods of time. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...ht=white+noise

^^ Probably the fuel pump priming itself. The new sw update (At least on the n54's) make it very apparent, especially if you are anywhere near the trunk when you press unlock.

Brought my car in to get serviced and fix a number of small issues...squeaky brakes, the black finish coming off one of my steering wheel buttons and the buzzing noise. (all of which would be fixed under warranty/service)
Echoing what Dackelone said, my service manager told me that the fix for the buzzing noise was a software update...since it was about 3 o' clock when I dropped my car off the SM told me that he would need it overnight....but he could give me a free rental. (SWWYEEEETT) So I'm cruising around in a 2011 328i XDrive for the time being...while markedly less fun to drive and much slower than my 135i...life could be worse. [PIC Related] |

UPDATE:
Got my car back from the dealer.... As it turns out...I already had the software update and the speakers still buzzed. So my service manager opened up a case with BMW and this is what they said...(see attachment) The buzzing is normal!? LOL I guess it's working as designed... |

Honestly, you can do what I did. Disconnect the rear speakers. They are so small and processed so heavily that anything that comes out of them is hardly decent
Working as designed.....nice.
