Headlights vibration, How much for front brake pads.
Hi, My headlight (xeon) vibrate when i hit bumps on the road, obviously i notice this when the lights are on at night they dont seem to be loose. Just wondering if anyone else has this happening.
Also my front brake pads (135i) are due in 1700km, what should i be paying to get them done at a BMW dealer, or if someone can recommend a place in Sydney that does good work for the right price. Thanks. |

135 convertible headlights look like they wobble due to the chassis flexing over bumps.
Changing pads is a very easy job, they should charge 0.5 hours labour (@$220/hr) however im not sure how much the standard pads cost. |

I think all of our Xeon headlights wiggle while driving at low speeds. Its something I have just gotten use to. I kind of think when the car is new it did it more than it does now.
As for brakes... BMW wants an arm and leg for those brake pads. I think something like $300 just for the pads. You might want to buy the BMW Performance rotors with the drilled holes. They are only like $10 more per rotor. I think $180 each. Labor should be max at 1.5 hours times your hourly rate. Over here the Germans charged 110 euros per hour. You might also need your brake fluid changed (one hours labor plus the fluid $10) - it should be done yearly. Dackel |

Thanks guys, i would be resonably happy to pay upto $500 for bmw to do the brakes but normally what ever price im thinking it ends up being twice as much at the dealer.
The headlights adjust themselves when i start the car, is it possible that something could be setting the adjustment off when hitting bumps on the road. |

Usually brake pads are quoted at $600 or so per axle. It's what I was quoted and also relatively similar for woosh (130i). Needless to say I went to my mechanic and got all four done and an oil change for $560.

the levelling is constant, there are sensors on the front and rear suspension that measure the angle of the car on the road and constantly level the lights.

I too noticed the beam of the headlights on the road look like they vibrate. More so when the car was new but i think i'm just used to it now.

As MickyD said, I think it's the suspension self-leveling at work. Every time your car points upwards, they dip the beams downward. Requirement under the law from what I gather.

I have these xenon lamps and i dont much like them. Think Ive worked out why the wiggle so much....
They dont have high/low beam - rather just and el cheapo "shutter" that has bugger all dampening. High beam = shutter up. Low beam = shutter down. Lack of damping - lots of wiggling over bumps. Trust a 12 yo to figure out how wiggles relate to a hairdressers sports car! (spangly wonders whaterver happened to toyo sillycars) |

In regards to the headlight wiggle... like someone said above... there is a sensor on the front and rear suspension. It is a plastic "ball and socket" type deal hooked up to a resistor. This tells the headligh computor what the car's suspension is doing and the headlights and kepts level.
I think when the car is new - these "ball and socket" levers/sensor... are tight and tend to bind some. Hence the wiggle when they move when the suspension gets loaded or unloaded. I would bet that over time these sensors are't as tight as when they were new... and that is why we don't notice the wiggle as much. Well.. that is just my two cents worth. As for the "el cheapo shutter"... How do you suppose BMW (or anyone else) can make a BiXeon headlamps? All modern day autos have a shutter type HID system. Unless they only have a low beam HID like in the old days! lol Dackel Dackel |
