I have chrome window trim and would like to have it painted black to match my wheels and grill..... Anyone ever done this at a place like maaco and had success? Also anyone know what a price may be to do this?

Maaco is the cheapest out there probably, you get what you pay for. For a small part like that I'd use a reputable place, how much can it possibly be.

I've had friends use Maaco and their paint looked like a huge fat ladies ass. orange peel everywhere and most had problems with the paint chipping and peeling. One friends paint was so bad, they painted over a bug on the car!

Iff your gonna paint it do it right, or you will be pissed at yourself the rest of the time you have the car.

I saw a paintjob from there that had over spray on everything (to include the TIRES with white paint no less)

they suck ass at masking stuff off. unless you are planning on taking off the trim to have it painted by them shouldnt be a problem. is it even possible to take the trim off ? i heard it was riveted on in the back

Yeah the big thing I am worried about is overspray... I am going to call around to find a good local body shop and see if they can do it...

You can get black out tape kits to do the job.

the words "Maaco" and "135i" should never, ever be used in the same sentence. you even remotely thinking about taking such a fine car like the 135i to Maaco is a disgrace to BMW. I wouldn't take my lawn mower to those people much less my beloved 135i.

that might sound kind of harsh, but it is what it is.

^^^^ ha ha... honestly I have never been there before... just thought they may do something like this...

I've never really needed any paint jobs done on any of my cars since I moved away from home...I am glad I am hearing the horror stores of maaco (now I know!!).. :-)

I've seen their results and it's definitely a case of you get what you pay for. It's not BMW worthy.

hey, they're cheap for a reason. It's cool that they're an option if you have an old beater you want to spruce up. But I don't think they're the right option for what you want to do.

If you are going to the trouble of taking the trim off, I am sure there are 10 people who would willingly meet up with you one day and swap as many people wanted the chrome but were forced to get black as part of the sport pack.

Is your goal to make it last, or just to make it pretty for a year or two before you bounce to another ride?

From what I understand, the only long-term effective way to paint over chrome is to sand (or sand blast/acid etch) it until it is no longer shiny, then epoxy powder coat it. That's the only "right" way to paint it.

The other "right" way of refinishing it would be having it re-chromed with a black chrome. (Black chromium electroplating).

If you wanted to make it last, those are the best options. If you aren't worried about it lasting, you might as well get MAACO to do it. Or rattle can it yourself. Because from what I understand, just spraying automotive paint over shiny chrome isn't going to last in the long term no matter who does it. But check with a real pro, because I could have gotten wrong information (by someone who wanted to charge me more....)

Also, each MAACO (or Earl Schieb) is different when it comes to the quality of the work. Ask to see the latest work of the actual painter who will be doing your car.

I have painted many chrome trim pieces at our shop. I'm new to this forum but have done this many times on Subaru's. There is more work to it but it can be done. I'm not sure I would have Maaco do it but if you did, take all the trim off and bring it in. It would be in your best interest to prep it yourself if you could.

You are better off getting them powder coated. That's what I'm doing with mine.
