Expected Tire Life ...
.... yes I did a search.
2009 135i Cabrio. Just rolled over 10,000 miles (90% highway) on a 1,000 mile roadtrip. Looked at the car today and noticed that the rear tires are baby bottom smooth bald!! Front's have about 7/32's left on them. I've turned the traction control off at most a dozen times in the time I've had the car. Is this normal for these cars or should I take it up with the dealership before I replace the tires? The car is stock except for seat back map pockets and a Hotchkiss front bar. TIA |

16,000 kms of life for a tire with a treadwear rating of 130 sounds about right to me. The dozen or so times you turned on the DTC should have no weight on the overall wear unless you were doing donuts!
Why would you even try and take it back to the dealer? It's not their problem. |

the dealer will tell you to fvck off as its a wear and tear item
if they dont tell you to fvck off, is cause they want you to pay the $500 a tire for the run craps |

I understand the quick wear .... I don't understand why the rears are bald and the fronts have 7/32" left. On my cars I typically use up the outside edge of the fronts. |

Sounds about right to me. The factory run-flats tread wear sucks for the performance they deliever.
I replaced mine at about 14k miles and they were completely shot. I need back tires again now, but this set has nearly 30k miles on them, which is much more reasonable IMO. |

Are your other cars front wheel drive? I've always had rear tires wear at an accelerated rate on my rwd cars. In fact I tend to replace rears twice as often as fronts on the M Coupe, which sees moderate track usage.

Thanks for that info. And it's because you drive a RWD car. I've had 3 different set oftires on my car. The bridgestones wore the rears faster. My pirelli winters wore the rears faster and my ps2s wore the rears faster

4 BMWs - 4 cars which averaged twice as much mileage on the front tires as the rears. Welcome to RWD!
On my Z4, I rotated the RE050A RFTs and got a total of 30,000 miles out of them (2 to 3/32" tread remaining). But since most of our cars now have staggered wheels, that's not feasible. If I were you, I'd replace the 2 rears with OEM (but not from the dealer) and then switch to non runflats when all four wear out. Tom |

Thanks for the feedback.
I'll get an alignment done when I replace the tires just to be sure. W.r.t. "welcome to RWD", I haven't owned a FWD since I dumped my Cavalier in '86. I've had BFG KD's, Azeni RT-615's, and Bridgestone RE01r's on various cars under various conditions including autoX and track days and have never seen tires wear this fast and this unevenly front to rear. |

I agree. Even abusing tires on RWD cars I've never had a set go in 12k miles. The run-flats treadwear just sucks. |

Funny, my wife still has plenty of tread on her OE RF's with 22k miles. PS2's can't come soon enough, but I'm surprised that these made it this far.
Even with DSC on, the simple fact that the 135i has 300 lb/ft of torque and no limited slip is going to cause fairly aggressive rear tire wear, at a much faster rate than wear to the fronts. However, if you're comparing tire wear of a rwd to fwd or awd, you're going to get different results. |

I'm comparing it to several powerful RWD cars I've owned in the past, most recently a GTO with well over 400 lb/ft of torque that was capable of lighting the tires up easily in second gear. Even running summer performance tires and drag racing it regularly I never had a set wear out with less than 20k on them. The set I replaced the runflats with has gone 30k miles even though it was done entirely with a JB3 on the car, so that's why I draw the conclusion that the problem is the tires, not the car. |

But BMW's tend to have fairly aggressive rear camber, which tends to wear tires faster than others. Your GTO had an LSD too, and while you got better mileage out of non-RFT's, the 135i is still fairly aggressive on tires, and the stock RFT's are certainly not known for good wear, contrary to my single experience. |

If I drove the Bimmer aggressively I would understand but the car has been used mostly for highway cruising. I tend abuse the outside shoulders of the front tire the most yet the fronts are worn very evenly and very little. |

Why? I've bought a new car a year for the last 5 years and this is my first BMW. Since this is, in my opinion, unusual wear, I think it reasonable to give them an opportunity to make me a happy BMW customer otherwise it may also be my last.

bmw 123d (around the same torque as 135i, no?), 13000km (8000miles), and even not halfway in the rear on my 18" RFT... combination of lots of normal driving and every once in a while some 'spirited' driving...
Must be the tarmac in US that's bad quality and sands of your rubber 10.000 miles and bald is really too soon... |

I would class your rear tyre wear as normal for summer RFT tyres. For lower wear you would probably need to pick all-season tyres with a treadwear rating above 300 and sacrifice significant levels of grip. |

I think the expectancy on the Goodyear NCT5 RFT is better. -- I have a 17" staggered set... originally on a 128i, now on my new 135i. I have 20k on the rears and the fronts should be good for 30 k.

I have only had RWD cars and had to replace tires right around 15k everytime. Down here in FL the roads are so hot you would be hard pressed to get more then 20k out of a performance summer tire, IMO.

I never got less than 20k out of a summer performance tire in FL, and that was with dozens of trips to Moroso. The roads are hot, but they're also almost completely straight. |
