I'm not sure but I do know that installing lowering springs alone will reduce the life of the stock dampers, and I am not sure how that figures in with the warranty. It's not a huge deal, but if the dealer is kind of tight, they may not cover any suspension-related items. Not sure though. Good luck.

Alot depends on your dealer, some of the nicer and more reasonable ones will pretty much look the other way with modifications, while others will make a note of them and try to deny your warranty at every turn. Legally, NO springs do not void your warranty.. the manufacturer doesn't have to warranty the affected parts anymore (ie you can complain about shocks dieing when you put on aftermarket springs, duh) but they wont void your engine/drivetrain warranty, etc etc..

I asked my salesman at Turnersville BMW in South NJ,

" Hey Ed, anything that was caused by the modification done to the vehicle will not be covered under warranty. That means to lower the car your more than welcome, but if it makes problems your warranty will not pick it up.....

Thanks
Ryan Dorsey"

But of course, if anything ever goes wrong with your suspension, they can always say that it was caused by lowering your car. But, you can always replace the lowered springs with your stock spring before going to the dealer if anything ever goes wrong with the suspension right?

I've heard the "i can swap the "mod" for orginal when it needs to go to dealership" arguement before. The reality is, if u have a suspension issue, there's a good chance u won't have the time to switch out the mod for stock. BMW, with good reason, should deny all warranty claims where a modifications by the owner might have contributed to the failure. It only makes sense.

For example if a guy installs aftermarket springs/shocks..lowers the car, stiffens the suspension and tracks the car a few times a month, I'd be damned if I'd warranty a rear-sub frame tear.

Chance are, the techs can tell what happened even if you put the stock springs back on, the stock dampers will still be there and they show evidence of shortened travel due to lowering springs. They can easily determine that this was due to less travel(lowering springs) and not caused by the stock springs.

I thought the suspensions on BMW's were already tuned for the optimum balance of handling and ride quality from the factory. If that's the case, wouldn't chaning it throw some things out of balance?

For the most part yes. But you'll find BMW owners , M3 owners especially, love to screw with their cars.

I would not put up with that BS from a dealership. You just purchased a $40,000 car what kind of crap is that. What do springs have to do with anything. I have an S4 with full exhaust, coilovers, swaybars, chip, and intake. The Audi dealer is the one who installed it all for me and they warranty stuff that shouldn't even be covered for me. If that is the kind of treatment you get you should consider moving brands.
