Lightbulb What makes a BMW Performance Exhaust different

Hi guys,
I'm looking to make the OEM exhaust sound like the genuine BMW PE.
I know what the insides of the stock muffler looks like but how the PE differs from it eludes me.

Does anyone have an endoscope/snake camera and could take a video and/or pictures of what you see when going in through the tailpipes? (yes I know, phrasing...)

I would love to know as well.. I've heard many PE exhausts, and my stock muffler with the PE resonator delete sounds just like it. I really think it's the same muffler with different tips and no flap..

All I know is... my PE sounds AWESOME!!!!

My PE sounds much better than when I had some N55 mid pipes installed on my factory exhaust(I have a N54). So... its more than just the y-pipe resonator delete. PE ftw!

PE for the win - I had a Magnaflow on my 128i and the PE beats it for sure. Loved the look of the Magnaflow though, I believe it had 3" pipes that suited the rear end so well.

I think it's been done, but someone throw a scope up both and let us know.

Agreed, I also had the PE with maddad midpipes and went back to the stock muffler and it's not the same. I regret selling my PE. Big time.

As with the e90/92 PE v.s. non-PE I suspect there is very little difference between the two. There are numerous threads with pictures of the stock and PE 335i muffler cut wide open to expose these differences.

Essentially it boils down to perforation of the pipes going through the box and more sound deadening material in the case of the stock box and solid, unperforated pipes and less material in the case of the PE.

Those that have modified the 335i stock box to have it resemble the PE setup seem to have had great success in making it sound almost identical (or better) than the PE. Would love to see someone with a stock 135i exhaust give it a go.

When I was on the market for a 1er I drove a 128i with PE exhaust, and a 135i with stock exhaust and they sounded pretty much e same.

a local here had opened one up and hollowed it out thinking it would be same as PE....not even close.

My PE sounds way different and perfect compared to my old maddad res delete pipes and stock 135i with golf tee mod.

Pure heaven when you get on the PE

The problem is that the 135i and the 335i have completely different exhaust parts. The 335i is a 2 piece muffler design with a pipe connecting them together. And the insides look nothing like ours.

Here's another thread about this, sadly no one could get their hands on a PE (or weren't willing to cut it open), but at least we get some pics of the stock innards. The OP in this thread removed all the glass wool from the inside, claimed it livened up the sound quite a bit. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=225537

We really won't know until someone with a PE gets theirs cut open!!
